Item Open Access A novel observer design for friction estimation(Taylor & Francis, 2023-05-10) Odabaş, Caner; Morgül, ÖmerIn this paper, we propose a novel adaptive friction estimator for simple mechanical systems with Coulombfriction. We assume that the friction constant is unknown and we propose an adaptive observer for itsestimation. We show that under certain conditions the observer structure is asymptotically stable. The pro-posed observer dynamics has two tuning parameters and essentially behaves as a second-order switchingsystem. These parameters could be utilised to tune some time domain performance measures such assettling time, per cent overshoot. etc., under certain conditions. Lastly, simulations reveal that when theactual friction is not confined to Coulomb friction only, the proposed design improves the position trackingperformance, especially when the position controller has low bandwidth.Item Open Access Analysis and design of switching and fuzzy systems(Bilkent University, 2002-09) Akgül, MuratIn this thesis we consider the controller design problems for switching and fuzzy systems. In switching systems, the system dynamics and/or control input take dierent forms in different parts of the underlying state space. In fuzzy systems, the system dynamics and/or control input consist of certain logical expressions. From this point of view, it is reasonable to expect certain similarities between these systems. We show that under certain conditions, a switching system may be converted into an equivalent fuzzy system. While the changes in the system variables in a switching system may be abrupt, such changes are typically smooth in a fuzzy system. Therefore obtaining such an equivalent fuzzy system may inherit the stability properties of the original switching system while smoothing the system dynamics. Motivated from this idea we propose various switching strategies for certain classes of nonlinear systems and provide some stability results. Due to the dificulties in designing such switching rules for nonlinear systems, most of the results are developed for certain specific type of systems. Due to the logical structure, obtaining rigorous stability results are very difficult for fuzzy systems. We propose a fuzzy controller design method and prove a stability result under certain conditions. The proposed method may also be applied to function approximation. We also consider a different stabilization method, namely phase portrait matching, in which the main aim is to choose the control input appropriately so that the dynamics of the closed-loop system is close to a given desired dynamics. If this is achieved, then the phase portrait of the closed-loop system will also be close to a desired phase portrait. We propose various schemes to achieve this task.Item Open Access Analysis of blood cell production under growth factors switching(Elsevier B.V., 2017) Djema, W.; Özbay, Hitay; Bonnet, C.; Fridman, E.; Mazenc, F.; Clairambault, J.Hematopoiesis is a highly complicated biological phenomenon. Improving its mathematical modeling and analysis are essential steps towards consolidating the common knowledge about mechanisms behind blood cells production. On the other hand, trying to deepen the mathematical modeling of this process has a cost and may be highly demanding in terms of mathematical analysis. In this paper, we propose to describe hematopoiesis under growth factor-dependent parameters as a switching system. Thus, we consider that different biological functions involved in hematopoiesis, including aging velocities, are controlled through multiple growth factors. Then we attempt a new approach in the framework of time-delay switching systems, in order to interpret the behavior of the system around its possible positive steady states. We start here with the study of a specific case in which switching is assumed to result from drug infusions. In a broader context, we expect that interpreting cell dynamics using switching systems leads to a good compromise between complexity of realistic models and their mathematical analysis. © 2017Item Open Access Comparative analysis of power consumption in asynchronous wavelength modular optical switching fabrics(Elsevier, 2011-04-02) Akar, N.; Eramo, V.; Raffaelli, C.Next-generation optical routers will be designed to support the flexibility required by Future Internet services and, at the same time, to overcome the power consumption bottleneck which appears to limit throughput scalability in today routers. A model to evaluate average power consumption in asynchronous optical switching fabrics is here presented to compare these architectures with other synchronous and asynchronous solutions. The combination of wavelength modular switching fabrics with low spatial complexity and asynchronous operation is demonstrated to be the most power-efficient solution among those considered which employ wavelength converters, through presentation and discussion of a thorough set of numerical results.Item Open Access Dimensioning shared-per-node recirculating fiber delay line buffers in an optical packet switch(Elsevier, 2013) Akar, N.; Gunalay, Y.Optical buffering based on fiber delay lines (FDLs) has been proposed as a means for contention resolution in an optical packet switch. In this article, we propose a queuing model for feedback-type shared-per-node recirculating FDL optical buffers in asynchronous optical switching nodes. In this model, optical packets are allowed to recirculate over FDLs as long as the total number of recirculations is less than a pre-determined limit to meet signal loss requirements. Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP)-based overflow traffic models and fixed-point iterations are employed to provide an approximate analysis procedure to obtain blocking probabilities as a function of various buffer parameters in the system when the packet arrival process at the optical switch is Poisson. The proposed algorithm is numerically efficient and accurate especially in a certain regime identified with relatively long and variably-sized FDLs, making it possible to dimension optical buffers in next-generation optical packet switching systems.Item Open Access Dwell time optimization in switching control of parameter varying time delay systems(IEEE, 2011) Yan, P.; Özbay, Hitay; Şansal, M.It has been shown that parameter varying systems with time delays can be robustly stabilized by switching control, provided that the plant's parameter varies slowly enough such that the dwell time conditions of the switched controllers can be satisfied. In this paper, the minimization of dwell time is considered, where an iterative search algorithm is developed from the singular value perspectives. The local minimal dwell time obtained in this paper can be used to estimate the upper bound on how fast the plant's parameters can vary. Meanwhile, the switching controller synthesis with optimal dwell time is also discussed, where robust stabilizer design algorithm is presented to achieve robust stability at certain operating range, as well as the local minimal dwell time for controller switching. A numerical example is given to illustrate the proposed algorithm.Item Open Access Electrically controlled resistive switching assisted active ultra-broadband optical tunability in the infrared(IEEE, 2013) Battal, Enes; Özcan, Ayşe; Okyay, Ali KemalWe present an electrically tunable optical device with ultra-broadband tunability operating in 2-10 μm spectrum. O.; Benson, T. M.; Sewell, P.; Altıntaş, Ayhan; Nosich, A. I.In this paper, we study the scattering and eigenvalue problems for a periodic open optical resonator that is an infinite chain of active circular cylindrical quantum wires standing in free space. The scattering problem is solved by the method of partial separation of variables. The eigenvalue problem differs from the first one by the absence of the incident field and presence of "active properties" of cylinders and yields the frequencies and thresholds of lasing. ©2009 IEEE.Item Open Access Observability and observers for nonlinear and switching systems(Bilkent University, 2001-08) Solak, ErcanItem Open Access Retrial queuing models of multi-wavelength FDL feedback optical buffers(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2011) Akar, N.; Sohraby, K.Optical buffers based on Fiber Delay Lines (FDL) have been proposed for contention resolution in optical packet/burst switching systems. In this article, we propose a retrial queuing model for FDL optical buffers in asynchronous optical switching nodes. In the considered system, the reservation model employed is of post-reservation type and optical packets are allowed to re-circulate over the FDLs in a probabilistic manner. We combine the MMPP-based overflow traffic models of the classical circuit switching literature and fixed-point iterations to devise an algorithmic procedure to accurately estimate blocking probabilities as a function of various buffer parameters in the system when packet arrivals are Poisson and packet lengths are exponentially distributed. The proposed algorithm is both accurate and fast, allowing one to use the procedure to dimension optical buffers in next-generation optical packet switching systems.Item Open Access Stability analysis of switched systems using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals(Elsevier, 2011) Çalişkan, S.Y.; Özbay, Hitay; Niculescu, S.-I.Piecewise Lyapunov-Razumikhin functions are previously used for obtaining a lower bound for the dwell time of the switched time delay systems under the assumption that each candidate system is delay dependently stable. In this work, using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals, a less conservative lower bound for the dwell time is obtained. Improvement in the dwell time is illustrated with an example. © 2011 IFAC.Item Open Access A switching control approach to stabilization of parameter varying time delay systems(IEEE, 2009) Yan, P.; Özbay, Hitay; Şansal, M.Robust stabilization problem is considered for time varying time delay systems, where the system parameters are scheduled along a measurable signal trajectory. A switching control approach is proposed for a class of parameter varying systems, where candidate controllers are designed for robust stabilization at certain operating regions. A dwell time based hysteresis switching logic is proposed to guarantee the stability of the switched parameter varying time delay system in the whole operating range. It is shown that if the parameter variation is slow enough (upper bound of the time derivative is determined in terms the dwell time for the switched delay system), then the system is stable with the proposed switched controllers.
