Item Open Access Antibacterial electrospun nanofibers from triclosan/cyclodextrin inclusion complexes(Elsevier, 2014) Celebioglu A.; Umu, O. C. O.; Tekinay, T.; Uyar, TamerThe electrospinning of nanofibers (NF) from cyclodextrin inclusion complexes (CD-IC) with an antibacterial agent (triclosan) was achieved without using any carrier polymeric matrix. Polymer-free triclosan/CD-IC NF were electrospun from highly concentrated (160% CD, w/w) aqueous triclosan/CD-IC suspension by using two types of chemically modified CD; hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) and hydroxypropyl-gamma-cyclodextrin (HPγCD). The morphological characterization of the electrospun triclosan/CD-IC NF by SEM elucidated that the triclosan/HPβCD-IC NF and triclosan/HPγCD-IC NF were bead-free having average fiber diameter of 520±250nm and 1100±660nm, respectively. The presence of triclosan and the formation of triclosan/CD-IC within the fiber structure were confirmed by 1H-NMR, FTIR, XRD, DSC, and TGA studies. The initial 1:1molar ratio of the triclosan:CD was kept for triclosan/HPβCD-IC NF after the electrospinning and whereas 0.7:1molar ratio was observed for triclosan/HPγCD-IC NF and some uncomplexed triclosan was detected suggesting that the complexation efficiency of triclosan with HPγCD was lower than that of HPβCD. The antibacterial properties of triclosan/CD-IC NF were tested against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria. It was observed that triclosan/HPβCD-IC NF and triclosan/HPγCD-IC NF showed better antibacterial activity against both bacteria compared to uncomplexed pure triclosan.Item Open Access Formation, compression and surface melting of colloidal clusters by active particles(Royal Society of Chemistry, 2015) Kümmel, F.; Shabestari, P.; Lozano, C.; Volpe, G.; Bechinger, C.We demonstrate with experiments and numerical simulations that the structure and dynamics of a suspension of passive particles is strongly altered by adding a very small (<1%) number of active particles. With increasing passive particle density, we observe first the formation of dynamic clusters comprised of passive particles being surrounded by active particles, then the merging and compression of these clusters, and eventually the local melting of crystalline regions by enclosed active particles.Item Open Access Nano-structured organically modified silica thin films for functional surfaces(2011) Bayındır, Mehmet; Yıldırım, Adem; Budunoglu, Hülya; Yaman, Mecit; Deniz, Hakan; Güler, Mustafa O.We report a template-free sol-gel method for preparation of nanoporous ormosil thin films at ambient conditions. The thin films are coated to the surfaces by using colloidal suspensions of ormosil gels. Gels are synthesized by using a trifunctional organosilane monomer, methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS), with a two-step acid base reaction. We prepared several ormosil thin films on glass, metal, plastic and paper surfaces with different functionalities like superhydrophobic, antireflective, antifogging and ice retarding properties, from gels prepared in different conditions. Also films on flexible substrates exhibits durable surface properties after several bending cycles. In addition, we also demonstrate that these thin films can be used for fluorescent sensing of explosives by doping them with fluorescent dyes.Item Open Access Terahertz time-domain study of silver nanoparticles synthesized by laser ablation in organic liquid(IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, 2016-07) Koral, C.; Ortaç, B.; Altan, H.We report the investigation of laser-synthesized Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) in an organic liquid environment by using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) technique. Colloidal Ag-NPs with an average diameter of 10 nm in two-propanol solution through nanosecond pulsed laser ablation were synthesized. THz-TDS measurements were performed on different volumetric concentration of Ag-NPs suspensions placed in 2-mm path length quartz cuvette. Due to the dispersive and highly absorptive nature of the nano liquids, an approach based on extracting the optical properties through the changes in amplitude and phase solely around the main peak of THz waveform is developed. This approach allowed for an accurate estimation of the complex refractive index of the Metallic-NPs suspension for the different prepared volumetric concentrations. In addition, using Maxwell-Garnett theory, the NP concentration is also extracted. This method shows that the time-domain nature of the THz pulse measurement technique is extremely useful in instances where slight variations in highly dispersive samples need to be investigated.
