Item Open Access Soft power in Turkish foreign policy under the AKP governments : 2002-2009(Bilkent University, 2010) Alpaydın, Utku Ali RızaThe concept of soft power has turned out to be one of the agenda-setting terms in the field of international relations upon its inception in the early 1990s. Despite its widespread usage, the inherent nature of the concept could not been grasped to a great extent. The increasing references to soft power in many of the analyses about Turkish foreign policy during the ruling Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP, (Justice and Development Party, JDP) era has created a need to present the notion of soft power as a proper theoretical concept and to discuss the foreign policy of the Turkish state conducted by the AKP governments in the light of such a theoretical background. Therefore, this thesis intends to present a refined theory of soft power embracing all the relevant points of the existing literature on soft power theory in order to make it utilizable for all cases and to implement this proposed theory to the case of Turkish foreign policy in a comparative manner by examining pre-AKP period and the period during the AKP has been in rule. Out of these explanations, the research question of this thesis emerges as such: “To what extent has soft power increased its influence in Turkish foreign policy under the AKP governments?” The main argument of the thesis can be put forward in the following manner: “The soft power of Turkish state has increased during the AKP term, although there has been some degree of soft power culture in the history of Turkish Republic.”Item Open Access Translation and language and cultural policies: the importance of political cognizance in audiovisual translator training(Selçuk University, 2019) Okyayuz, Ayşe ŞirinPolicies concerning language and culture are integral to the translators’ work as they are an intrinsic part of the translation process. Thus, it becomes necessary to include a good bit of what could be referred to as ‘policy cognizance’, which could be defined as an understanding of the policies that mold the practice spanning from historical perspectives to the present day laws and regulations, in translator training. The following study is an effort to refer to some of the subjects that may be included in an audiovisual translation course within the objective defined. It aims to exemplify and justify the integration of certain training modules that need to be included in a comprehensive training curriculum if the translator-to-be is to become policy cognizant in the field. Following an overview on the relation between state, language policy and translation, the study goes on to concentrate on suggestions for modules that can be integrated into audiovisual translation training at university level. It is penned with the hope of providing food for thought and a perspective for the translator trainer and translator-to be who wish to specialize in audiovisual translation.Item Open Access Turkey's foreign policy activism: vision continuity and reality checks(Routledge, 2014) Grigoriadis, I. N.It is argued in this study that Turkey's ambition to play a key regional role and become a global actor is not novel. There have been at least two similar initiatives in recent history which defended Turkey's extraordinary strategic potential and aspired to put it into the heart of global politics. What has, however, been indeed novel and has lent credibility to the whole experiment is Turkey's recent economic dynamism and political reforms. While such a trend is indeed reasonable, Turkey's claims for a global strategic role and a value-based foreign policy may be already overblown. Turkey is bound to play a key regional role and may indeed become a global actor in the years to come; its capabilities, however, are not infinite, and significant risks may lurk in their overestimation. © 2014 Taylor & Francis.
