Item Open Access An array of surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrates based on plasmonic lenses(Wiley, 2012-10-01) Kahraman, M.; Cakmakyapan, S.; Özbay, Ekmel; Culha, M.An array of ring-shaped holes is prepared from silver thin films using electron beam lithography. The optimal conditions for high performance as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate are investigated. Either the diameter of the hole (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 μm) or the slit width (200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 nm) is varied. 4-Aminothiophenol (ATP) adsorbed on the structures as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) is used as probe to evaluate the SERS performance of the generated structures. It is found that there is an optimal configuration for ring-shaped holes with a 3.0-μm diameter and 200-nm slit width. The SERS activity on this optimal lens configuration is found to be 13 times greater than that of the activity on the silver thin film. An array of these structures at this optimal configuration can easily be constructed and used in a range of SERS-based sensing applications. The low-cost, simple set-up, relatively high production rate and reproducibility increase the interests on this method in both academia and industry. Electrospun nanofibers are produced from a broad range of materials with extremely high surface area, very light-weight, nano-porous features and distinct physical/mechanical properties. The general talk in this technique focuses on the production of nanofibers from polymer base materials. However, very recent studies demonstrated that, it is also possible to obtain nanofibers from non-polymeric systems. For this novel development in electrospinning researches, we have achieved to generate nanofibers from cyclodextrins (CD) without using a polymeric template. CD are cyclic oligosaccharides consisting of α-(1,4)-linked glucopyranose units. The truncated cone shape structure of CD provides a favorable place for various kinds of organic molecules to form non-covalent host-guest inclusion complexes (IC). The enhancements and progressing at the guest molecules property and situation, creating with the inclusion complexation, make CD applicable in variety of areas including filtration, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, functional foods, textiles, analytic chemistry etc. In this thesis, we report on the electrospinning of CD nanofibers, represent their functionalization and potential applications. Firstly, we produced CD nanofibers from three different chemically modified CD types (hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD), hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin (HPγCD) and methyl-β-cyclodextrin (MβCD)). Afterwards, the electrospinning of native CD (α-CD, β-CD and γ-CD) nanofibers was achieved. The molecular entrapment capability of CD nanofibers was shown by capturing toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the surrounding. As the next step, the polymer-free nanofibers were obtained from the cyclodextrin inclusion complexes (CD-IC) with antibacterial agent, vanillin and essential oils. Here, we have also indicated applicability of CD-IC nanofibers as a result of antibacterial test. The functionalization of the CD nanofibers was continued with the green and one-step synthesis of metal nanoparticles (Ag-NP, Au-NP and Pd-NP) incorporated nanofibers, in which CD were used as reducing, stabilizing agent and fiber template. Even, the antibacterial, SERS and catalyst potential of these CD based nanofibers were demonstrated for the related nanoparticles. Our research is expanded to a new stage by the production of insoluble poly-CD nanofibers. We have worked on different crosslinking agents to attain insoluble poly-CD nanofibers with uniform morphology. After the optimization of poly-CD nanofibers, the most durable polyCD nanowebs were selected for further analysis and evaluation of the filtration performance in liquid environment. Within poly-CD nanofibers, we have eliminated the solubility challenge of CD nanofibers that restrict their usage. So, we assume that, poly-CD nanofibers will lead-up to generation of new advances for practices of CD nanofibers. All studies showed that, the self-assembly and self-aggregation property of CD are the prior requirements for the electrospinnability of these small molecules. To conclude, very intriguing materials were obtained by integrating large surface area of nanofibers with specific host-guest inclusion complexation capability and non-toxic, biocompatible nature of the CD. Moreover, CD molecules, which are generally used in the powder form, were rendered into more applicable nanofibers form that will represent ease during their usage.Item Open Access Dynamic relationship between precious metals(2013) Sensoy, A.We use a relatively new approach to endogenously detect the volatility shifts in the returns of four major precious metals (gold, silver, platinum and palladium) from 1999 to 2013. We reveal that the turbulent year of 2008 has no significant effect on volatility levels of gold and silver however causes an upward shift in the volatility levels of palladium and platinum. Using the consistent dynamic conditional correlations, we show that precious metals get strongly correlated with each other in the last decade which reduces the diversification benefits across them and indicates a convergence to a single asset class. We endogenously detect the shifts in these dynamic correlation levels and reveal uni-directional volatility shift contagions among precious metals. The results show that gold has a uni-directional volatility shift contagion effect on all other precious metals and silver has a similar effect on platinum and palladium. However, the latter two do not matter in terms of volatility shift contagion. Thus, investors that hedge with precious metals should, in particular, monitor the volatility levels of gold and silver. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.Item Open Access Dynamic tuning of plasmon resonance in the visible using graphene(The Optical Society, 2016) Balci, S.; Balci, O.; Kakenov, N.; Atar, F. B.; Kocabas, C.We report active electrical tuning of plasmon resonance of silver nanoprisms (Ag NPs) in the visible spectrum. Ag NPs are placed in close proximity to graphene which leads to additional tunable loss for the plasmon resonance. The ionic gating of graphene modifies its Fermi level from 0.2 to 1 eV, which then affects the absorption of graphene due to Pauli blocking. Plasmon resonance frequency and linewidth of Ag NPs can be reversibly shifted by 20 and 35 meV, respectively. The coupled graphene-Ag NPs system can be classically described by a damped harmonic oscillator model. Atomic layer deposition allows for controlling the graphene-Ag NP separation with atomic-level precision to optimize coupling between them.Item Open Access Effect of solvent refractive index on the surface plasmon resonance nanoparticle optical absorption(2007) Ertas, G.; Süzer, ŞefikOptical properties of plasmon coupled silver and gold nanoparticles were studied as a function of the refractive index of the surrounding medium. Our studies confirmed that the effect of changes in the refractive index of the surrounding medium was more difficult to demonstrate from an experimental point of view, because of the very high susceptibility of nanoparticles to aggregate in aqueous and organic solvents. Whereas the position of the absorption bands of triiodide in these solvents shows a clear dependence on medium's refractive index, the surface plasmon band position of silver and gold nanoparticles do not exhibit the same dependence. This is attributed to a non-negligible interaction of these solvents with nanoparticle surfaces. L.; Dang C.; Mutlugün, E.; Zhang, K.; Demir, Hilmi Volkan; Sun X. W.A colloidal quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) is reported with substantially enhanced electroluminescence by embedding a thin layer of Ag nanoislands into hole transport layer. The maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.1% achieved in the present work is the highest efficiency value reported for green-emitting QLEDs with a similar structure, which corresponds to 46% enhancement compared with the reference device. The relevant mechanisms enabling the EQE enhancement are associated with the near-field enhancement via an effective coupling between excitons of the quantum dot emitters and localized surface plasmons around Ag nano-islands, which are found to lead to good agreement between the simulation results and the experimental data, providing us with a useful insight important for plasmonic QLEDs. © 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. After the growth of a blue light emitting diode structure, the p-GaN layer was roughened by inductive coupled plasma etching and the Ag nanostructures were formed on it. This structure showed a drastic enhancement in photoluminescence and electroluminescence intensity and the degree of enhancement was found to depend on the morphology of Ag nanostructures. From the time-resolved photoluminescence measurement a faster decay rate for the Ag-coated structure was observed. The calculated Purcell enhancement factor indicated that the improved luminescence intensity was attributed to the energy transfer from electron-hole pair recombination in the quantum well to electron vibrations of surface plasmon at the Ag-coated surface of the roughened p-GaN. © 2011 SPIE.Item Open Access Enhanced photoresponse of conformal TiO2/Ag nanorod array-based Schottky photodiodes fabricated via successive glancing angle and atomic layer deposition(AVS Science and Technology Society, 2015) Haider A.; Cansizoglu, H.; Cansizoglu, M. F.; Karabacak, T.; Okyay, Ali Kemal; Bıyıklı, NecmiIn this study, the authors demonstrate a proof of concept nanostructured photodiode fabrication method via successive glancing angle deposition (GLAD) and atomic layer deposition (ALD). The fabricated metal-semiconductor nanorod (NR) arrays offer enhanced photoresponse compared to conventional planar thin-film counterparts. Silver (Ag) metallic NR arrays were deposited on Ag-film/Si templates by utilizing GLAD. Subsequently, titanium dioxide (TiO2) was deposited conformally on Ag NRs via ALD. Scanning electron microscopy studies confirmed the successful formation of vertically aligned Ag NRs deposited via GLAD and conformal deposition of TiO2 on Ag NRs via ALD. Following the growth of TiO2 on Ag NRs, aluminum metallic top contacts were formed to complete the fabrication of NR-based Schottky photodiodes. Nanostructured devices exhibited a photo response enhancement factor of 1.49 × 102 under a reverse bias of 3 V. © 2014 American Vacuum Society.Item Open Access Enhancement of plasmon resonances in the wave scattering by finite grids of circular silver wires(IEEE, 2010-09) Natarov, D. Brazing was performed in a conventional atmosphere control furnace. The brazing temperatures and holding times employed in this study were 800-870°C and 10-20min, respectively. The qualities of the brazed joints were evaluated by ultrasonic test and the microstructure and phase constitution of the bonded joints were analyzed by means of metallography, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The mechanical properties of brazed joints were evaluated by microhardness and shear tests. The diffusion between Ti, Ag, Cu, Zn and Cd from substrate and braze alloy, developed a strong reaction between each other. A number of intermetallic phases, such as TiCu and Ti2Cu in the Ag-Zn solid solution matrix have been identified especially at 870°C - 20min. Both the brazing temperature and the holding time are critical factors for controlling the microstructure and hence the mechanical properties of the brazed joints. The optimum brazing parameters was achieved at 870°C - 20min. Based on the shear test result, all cracks propagate along the brittle intermetallic compounds like Ti2Cu in the reaction layer which typically are composed of quasi-cleavage (Ag-Zn matrix) and brittle appearance. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.Item Open Access Evaluation of silver content and antibacterial activities of silver loaded fiber/cotton blended textile fabrics(2010) Üreyen, M. E.; Gök Ö.; Ates, M.; Günkaya G.; Süzer, ŞefikThe aims of this work were to analyze the antibacterial activity and laundering durability of the silver loaded cellulosic fiber/cotton blended antibacterial textile fabrics, to quantify the silver content present in fabrics, and to examine the relationship between the antibacterial activity and silver content. For this aims knitting fabrics consisting of SeaCell® Active, which is the cellulosic fiber incorporated with seaweed and silver ions, and cotton fibers blended with five different ratios were produced. All fabric samples bleached and washed 60 times. The antibacterial efficiency was evaluated according to AATCC 100-1999 method after each ten laundry cycles. Silver content of the fabrics were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Fiber and fabric surfaces were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) views. Antibacterial tests showed that good antibacterial activity can be achieved after several washings even with 3% of SeaCell ® Active fibers in blended fabrics. Significant correlation was found between silver content and bacterial reductionItem Embargo Facile synthesis of bimetallic nanoparticles with diverse nanostructures using metal acetylacetonates(Bilkent University, 2024-01) Sayma, Dalya M. F.Bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) have become a fundamental subject in the field of nanoscience and inorganic chemistry. Owing to the fascinating optical and catalytic properties that rise from their synergetic effect, plasmonic-catalytic bimetallic NPs, in particular, are employed in a myriad of applications such as catalysis, sensing and photocatalysis. Optical properties of plasmonic NPs such as gold or silver NPs are based on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible spectral range. Plasmonic NPs enhance the localization of electromagnetic fields, converting light to hot carriers or heat that can be used to drive chemical reactions. On the other hand, catalytic metals, which have d-bands close to the Fermi-level, make strong binding to reactants and lower the activation energy of chemical reactions. The properties of plasmonic-catalytic bimetallic NPs such as efficiency or product selectivity in the chemical reaction do not only rely on factors like size and composition of metal NPs, but more importantly, on the types of nanostructures formed. Herein, several nanostructures were synthesized by developing a facile approach using metal acetylacetonates. The synthesized NPs include bare silver NPs, bare palladium NPs, Pd@Ag core-shell NPs, Pd@Ag nanowires, Ag-Pd alloyed core-satellite NPs, Ag-Pt alloyed nano-stars and concave nano-cubes, and trimetallic AgPdPt NPs. In this study, it was found that the temperature, composition of metal components, and amount of capping and reducing agents play a key role in the synthesis of different types of bimetallic NPs. This study is important in the field of nanochemistry as it provides a novel synthesis method for generating plasmonic-catalytic bimetallic NPs.Item Open Access InGaN green light emitting diodes with deposited nanoparticles(Elsevier BV, 2007) Butun, B.; Cesario J.; Enoch, S.; Quidant, R.; Özbay, EkmelWe grew an InGaN/GaN-based light-emitting diode (LED) wafer by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), fabricated devices by optical lithography, and successfully deposited ellipsoidal Ag nano-particles by way of e-beam lithography on top. The diodes exhibited good device performance, in which we expected an enhancement of the radiated intensity by the simulations and emission measurements. The obtained results showed the feasibility of plasmon-assisted LED emission enhancement.Item Open Access Investigation on braze joint strength and microstructure of Ti-CP with Ag and Ti base filler alloys(American Welding Society, 2012) Ganjeh, E.; Khorsand H.; Sarkhosh H.; Ghaffari, M.; Sabet H.; Dehkordi, E.H.This research investigates influences of brazing parameters (brazing alloy, temperature and time) on microstructures and mechanical properties of a commercially pure (CP) titanium sheet which is brazed with CBS 34 (Ag-based) and STEMET 1228 (Ti-based) braze-filler foils. Brazing was performed in a conventional inert furnace at temperature ranges of 800-870°C and 10-30 minutes for holding times. Qualities of the brazed joints were evaluated by ultrasonic testing, and then, microstructure and phase constitution of the bonded joints were analyzed by means of metallography, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Mechanical properties of brazed joints were evaluated by shear testing. Diffusion of titanium from substrate to filler alloy developed a strong reaction between them. A number of phases such as TiCu, Ti 2Cu, TiAg, Ag-Zn solid solution matrix (for Ag-based brazed samples) and Ti 2Cu, (Ti,Zr) 2Ni, Zr 2Cu (for Ti-based brazed samples) have been identified. The optimum brazing parameters were achieved at a temperature of 870 °C-20 min for CBS 34 and 870 °C-30 min for STEMET 1228. The specimen using STEMET 1228 braze alloy demonstrates best bonding strength (equal to Ti-CP tensile strength). A.; Okyay, Ali KemalPlasmonically enhanced absorbing structures have been emerging as strong candidates for photovoltaic (PV) devices. We investigate metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structures that are suitable for tuning spectral absorption properties by modifying layer thicknesses. We have utilized gold and silver nanoparticles to form the top metal (M) region, obtained by dewetting process compatible with large area processes. For the middle (I) and bottom (M) layers, different dielectric materials and metals are investigated. Optimum MIM designs are discussed. We experimentally demonstrate less than 10 percent reflection for most of the visible (VIS) and near infrared (NIR) spectrum. In such stacks, computational analysis shows that the bottom metal is responsible for large portion of absorption with a peak of 80 percent at 1000 nm wavelength for chromium case.Item Open Access Mechanochemical activation and patterning of an adhesive surface toward nanoparticle deposition(American Chemical Society, 2015) Baytekin, H. T.; Baytekin, B.; Huda, S.; Yavuz, Z.; Grzybowski, B. A.Mechanical pulling of adhesive tape creates radicals on the tapes surface. These radicals are capable of reducing metal salts to the corresponding metal nanoparticles. In this way, the mechanically activated tape can be decorated with various types of nanoparticles, including Au, Ag, Pd, or Cu. While retaining their mechanical properties and remaining "sticky, " the tapes can exhibit new properties derived from the presence of metal nanoparticles (e.g., bacteriostaticity, increased electrical conductivity). They can also be patterned with nanoparticles only at selective locations of mechanical activation.Item Open Access MIMIM photodetectors using plasmonically enhanced MIM absorbers(SPIE, 2017) Dereshgi, S. Abedini; Okyay, Ali KemalWe demonstrate super absorbing metal-insulator-metal (MIM) stacks and MIMIM photosensitive devices operating at visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) spectrum, where absorbing (top) MIM and photocollecting (bottom) MIM can be optimized separately. We investigate different bottom metals in absorbing MIM with nanoparticles realized by dewetting of silver thin film on top. While gold and silver have conventionally been considered the most appropriate plasmonic absorbers, we demonstrate different absorbing metals like aluminum and specifically chromium, with its plasma frequency happening at 850 nm, as more efficient layers for absorption. Absorption in chromium hits 82 percent around 1000 nm. We provide convincing evidences by doing reflection experiment and computational simulations for absorbing MIM part. We also suggest for the first time investigating electric loss tangent of metal or coherently, surface plasmon quality factor of absorbing metals which are reliable tools for engineering different metal layers. They reveal that despite the fact that gold and silver are good plasmonic scatterers in VIS-NIR and reliable absorbers in VIS region, they are not proper choices as absorbers for NIR applications. Once the most optimum absorbing design is pointed out, we integrate it on top of another metal-insulator to form an MIMIM photodetector with tunneling photocurrent path. The final optimized sample consisting of silver - hafnium oxide - chromium - aluminum oxide - silver nanoparticles (from bottom to top) has a dark current of 7nA and a photoresponsivity peak of 0.962 mA/W at 1000 nm and a full width at half maximum of 300 nm, while applied bias is 50 mV and device areas are 300 μm x 600 μm. This photoresponse shows 70 times enhancement compared to former reported spin coated rare nanoparticle MIMIMs.Item Open Access MnOx-Promoted pdAg alloy nanoparticles for the additive-free dehydrogenation of formic acid at room temperature(American Chemical Society, 2015) Bulut, A.; Yurderi, M.; Karatas, Y.; Say, Z.; Kivrak H.; Kaya, M.; Gulcan, M.; Ozensoy, E.; Zahmakiran, M.Formic acid (HCOOH) has a great potential as a safe and a convenient hydrogen carrier for fuel cell applications. However, efficient and CO-free hydrogen production through the decomposition of formic acid at low temperatures (<363 K) in the absence of additives constitutes a major challenge. Herein, we present a new heterogeneous catalyst system composed of bimetallic PdAg alloy and MnOx nanoparticles supported on amine-grafted silica facilitating the liberation of hydrogen at room temperature through the dehydrogenation of formic acid in the absence of any additives with remarkable activity (330 mol H2·mol catalyst-1·h-1) and selectivity (>99%) at complete conversion (>99%). Moreover this new catalytic system enables facile catalyst recovery and very high stability against agglomeration, leaching, and CO poisoning. Through a comprehensive set of structural and functional characterization experiments, mechanistic origins of the unusually high catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability of this unique catalytic system are elucidated. Current heterogeneous catalytic architecture presents itself as an excellent contender for clean hydrogen production via room-temperature additive-free dehydrogenation of formic acid for on-board hydrogen fuel cell applications.
