Item Open Access Enhanced position estimation via node cooperation(IEEE, 2010) Sahinoglu, Z.; Gezici, SinanTwo-way time-of-arrival (TW-ToA) is a widely used ranging protocol that can provide the distance between two devices without time synchronization. One drawback of the TW-ToA is poor positioning accuracy in the absence of a sufficient number of reference ranging devices. Also, for a self-positioning system with a limited battery life, it might be necessary to limit the number of transmissions while satisfying accuracy constraints. In this paper, a cooperative positioning protocol [1] is studied, which can improve positioning accuracy compared to the conventional TW-ToA based positioning systems and also facilitate positioning with fewer packet transmissions; hence, it can prolong battery life on average. The maximum likelihood estimator is obtained for the cooperative technique and the limits on the positioning accuracy are quantified in terms of the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Simulation results are provided in order to show performance improvements. ©2010 IEEE.Item Open Access Noise enhanced detection in multiple-access environments(IEEE, 2009) Bayram, Suat; Gezici, SinanUnder certain conditions, addition of noise can enhance performance of suboptimal detectors, which is called the stochastic resonance (SR) effect. In this paper, the effects of SR are investigated for conventional detectors in the presence of multiple-access interference. First, conditions under which probability of error performance of the detector can or cannot be improved are obtained. Then, performance of noise enhanced detectors are analyzed, and an upper bound on the amount of performance improvement that can be obtained via SR is derived. Numerical examples are presented to support the theoretical analysis.Item Open Access Performance analysis of code-multiplexed transmitted-reference ultra-wideband systems(IEEE, 2011) Tutay, Mehmet Emin; Gezici, Sinan; Poor H.V.In code-multiplexed transmitted-reference (CM-TR) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems, data signals and reference signals are transmitted using two distinct orthogonal codes. In this way, performance improvements and/or implementation advantages are obtained compared to transmitted-reference (TR) and frequency-shifted reference (FSR) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. In this study, performance of CM-TR systems is investigated, and probability of error expressions are obtained. For the single user case, a closed-form expression for the exact probability of error is derived, whereas a Gaussian approximation, the accuracy of which depends on the number of frames per symbol, is considered for the multiuser case. Also, the maximum likelihood detector is derived, and numerical examples are presented. © 2011 IEEE.Item Open Access Quadrupedal bounding with an actuated spinal joint(IEEE, 2011) Çulha, Utku; Saranlı, UluçMost legged vertebrates use flexible spines and supporting muscles to provide auxiliary power and dexterity for dynamic behaviors, resulting in higher speeds and additional maneuverability during locomotion. However, most existing legged robots capable of dynamic locomotion incorporate only a single rigid trunk with actuation limited to legs and associated joints. In this paper, we investigate how quadrupedal bounding can be achieved in the presence of an actuated spinal joint and characterize associated performance improvements compared to bounding with a rigid robot body. In the context of both a new controller structure for bounding with a body joint and existing bounding controllers for the rigid trunk, we use optimization methods to identify the highest performance gait parameters and establish that the spinal joint allows increased forward speeds and hopping heights. © 2011 IEEE.Item Open Access Space weather activities of IONOLAB group using TNPGN GPS Network(IEEE, 2011) Aktug, B.; Lenk O.; Kurt, M.; Parmaksiz, E.; Ozdemir, S.; Arikan F.; Sezen, U.; Toker, C.; Arıkan, OrhanCharacterization and constant monitoring of variability of the ionosphere is of utmost importance for the performance improvement of HF communication, Satellite communication, navigation and guidance systems, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems, Space Craft exit and entry into the atmosphere and space weather. Turkish National Permanent GPS Network (TNPGN) is the Reference Station Network of 146 continuously-operating GNSS stations of which are distributed uniformly across Turkey and North Cyprus Turkish Republic since May 2009. IONOLAB group is currently investigating new techniques for space-time interpolation, and automatic mapping of TEC through a TUBITAK research grant. It is utmost importance to develop regional stochastic models for correction of ionospheric delay in geodetic systems and also form a scientific basis for communication link characterization. This study is a brief summary of the efforts of IONOLAB group in monitoring of space weather, and correction of geodetic positioning errors due to ionosphere using TNPGN. © 2011 IEEE.Item Open Access Throughput modeling of single hop CSMA networks with non-negligible propagation delay(IEEE, 2013) Koseoglu, M.; Karasan, E.We analyze the performance of the CSMA protocol under propagation delays that are comparable with packet transmission times. We propose a semi-Markov model for the 2-node CSMA channel. For the 2-node case, the capacity reduces to 40% of the zero-delay capacity when the one-way propagation delay is 10% of the packet transmission time. We then extend this model and obtain the optimum symmetric probing rate that achieves the maximum network throughput as a function of the average propagation delay, d, and the number of nodes sharing the channel, N. The proposed model predicts that the total capacity decreases with d-1 as N goes to infinity when all nodes probe the channel at the optimum rate. The optimum probing rate for each node decreases with 1/N and the total optimum probing rate decreases faster than d-1 as N goes to infinity. We investigate how the short-term unfairness problem in CSMA worsens as the propagation delay increases and propose a back-off mechanism to mitigate this issue. The theoretical results presented in this paper can be used as a benchmark for the performance improvements provided by algorithms that have already been developed.Item Open Access Utilization-based dynamic scheduling algorithm for wireless mesh networks(SpringerOpen, 2010-10) Kas, M.; Korpeoglu, I.; Karasan, E.Channel access scheduling is one of the key components in the design of multihop wireless mesh networks (WMNs). This paper addresses the allocation/demand mismatch problem observed in oblivious WMN channel access scheduling schemes and proposes Utilization-Based Scheduling (UBS). UBS is a Spatial-TDMA- (STDMA-) based dynamic channel access scheduling scheme designed with the aim of increasing the application-level throughput. In UBS, each node has a weight, which is dynamically adjusted in accordance with the node's slot usage history and packet-queue occupancy. UBS is a fully distributed algorithm, where each node adjusts its own weight and makes pseudorandom transmission attempts using only the locally available information. To demonstrate the performance improvements of the dynamic weight adjustment, the performance of UBS is compared against other channel access scheduling schemes through extensive ns-2 simulations under both uniform and nonuniform traffic patterns. © 2010 Miray Kas et al.
