Item Open Access An approximate stance map of the spring mass hopper with gravity correction for nonsymmetric locomotions(IEEE, 2009) Arslan, Ömür; Saranlı, Uluç; Morgül, ÖmerThe Spring-Loaded Inverted Pendulum (SLIP) model has long been established as an effective and accurate descriptive model for running animals of widely differing sizes and morphologies, while also serving as a basis for several hopping robot designs. Further research on this model led to the discovery of several analytic approximations to its normally nonintegrable dynamics. However, these approximations mostly focus on steady-state running with symmetric trajectories due to their linearization of gravitational effects, an assumption that is quickly violated for locomotion on more complex terrain wherein transient, non-symmetric trajectories dominate. In this paper, we introduce a novel gravity correction scheme that extends on one of the more recent analytic approximations to the SLIP dynamics and achieves good accuracy even for highly non-symmetric trajectories. Our approach is based on incorporating the total effect of gravity on the angular momentum throughout a single stance phase and allows us to preserve the analytic simplicity of the approximation to support our longer term research on reactive footstep planning for dynamic legged locomotion. We compare the performance of our method in simulation to two other existing analytic approximations and show that it outperforms them for most physically realistic non-symmetric SLIP trajectories while maintaining the same accuracy for symmetric trajectories. © 2009 IEEE.Item Open Access Experimental validation of strong directional selectivity in nonsymmetric metallic gratings with a subwavelength slit(American Institute of Physics, 2011-02-02) Cakmakyapan, S.; Caglayan, H.; Serebryannikov, A. E.; Özbay, EkmelStrong directional selectivity is theoretically predicted and experimentally validated at the microwave frequencies in the beaming regime for a single subwavelength slit in nonsymmetric metallic gratings with double-side corrugations. The operation regime can be realized at a fixed angle of incidence when the surface-plasmon assisted transmission is significant within a narrow range of observation angles, if illuminating one of the grating interfaces, and tends to vanish for all observation angles, if illuminating the opposite interface. The studied effect is connected with asymmetry (nonreciprocity) in the beaming that occurs if the surface plasmon properties are substantially different for the two interfaces being well isolated from each other.Item Open Access Multichannel optical diode with unidirectional diffraction relevant total transmission(Optical Society of American (OSA), 2012) Serebryannikov, A.E.; Cakmak, A.O.; Özbay, EkmelWe will show that broadband unidirectional optical transmission with a total transmission maximum inside the band can be obtained for linearly polarized incident waves in the nonsymmetric photonic crystal gratings made of isotropic linear materials at a fixed nonzero or zero angle of incidence. Being based on the merging of diffraction and dispersion effects, the basic physical mechanism studied exploits the transmission channels associated with higher orders, for which asymmetry in the coupling conditions at the two grating interfaces appears when spatial inversion symmetry is broken. Total transmission in one direction and zero transmission in the opposite direction can be obtained due to hybridization of Fabry-Perot type resonances with a diffraction anomaly that yields a diode-like operation regime. Single-beam deflection and two-beam splitting can be obtained, for which transmission can be (nearly) total, if the corrugated side is illuminated. In contrast to the previous studies, it is also shown that unidirectional transmission can appear only at a fixed frequency and only due to diffractions, when total transmission occurs at the noncorrugated-side illumination, being in agreement with the Lorentz Lemma. © 2012 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access One-way transmission through the subwavelength slit in nonsymmetric metallic gratings(Optical Society of America, 2010-07-27) Cakmakyapan, S.; Serebryannikov, A. E.; Caglayan, H.; Özbay, EkmelAn approach for obtaining one-way transmission in the beaming regime is suggested that is based on the directional radiation of surface plasmons in nonsymmetric metallic gratings with a single slit. In contrast to the various nonsymmetric one-way diffraction gratings that have recently been proposed, the possibility of obtaining of narrow beams is demonstrated. Strong directional selectivity can appear a wide range of the observation angles, while the angle of incidence is retained.Item Open Access Radiation impedance of an array of circular capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers(IEEE, 2010) Senlik, M. N.; Olcum, S.; Köymen, Hayrettin; Atalar, AbdullahThe radiation impedance of a capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (cMUT) with a circular membrane is calculated analytically using its velocity profile for the frequencies up to its parallel resonance frequency for both the immersion and the airborne applications. The results are verified by finite element simulations. The work is extended to calculate the radiation impedance of an array of cMUT cells positioned in a hexagonal pattern. A higher radiation resistance improves the bandwidth as well as the efficiency of the cMUT. The radiation resistance is determined to be a strong function of the cell spacing. It is shown that a center-to-center cell spacing of 1.25 wavelengths maximizes the radiation resistance, if the membranes are not too thin. It is also found that excitation of nonsymmetric modes may reduce the radiation resistance in immersion applications.Item Open Access Two types of single-beam deflection and asymmetric transmission in photonic structures without interface corrugations(Optical Society of America, 2016) Serebryannikov, A. E.; Colak, E.; Magath, T.; Özbay, EkmelWe study single-beam deflection and asymmetry in transmission, two aspects of the same phenomenon that appear in the topologically simple, nonsymmetric, photonic crystal (PhC)-based structures without corrugations at the interfaces. Strong diffractions enabling efficient blazing, i.e., redistribution of the incident wave energy in favor of the desired higher diffraction order(s), can be achieved owing to the defect-like layer(s) embedded in a regular slab of PhC. The main features, together with the peculiarities of the two basic transmission types and relevant coupling and deflection scenarios, are discussed, for one of which a part of the PhC works in the evanescent-wave regime. Performances are suggested, in which efficient single-beam deflection and asymmetry in transmission can be obtained even when the irregular layer is deeply embedded. More than 97% of the incident wave energy can be converted into a single deflected beam that is associated with the first negative diffraction order, even though the entire structure is nonsymmetric and the diffractive element is located at some distance from the incidence interface.
