Item Open Access 1960s Turkey from the perspective of the Peace Corps volunteers(Bilkent University, 2023-08) Ünal, MuhammedThis thesis aims to examine the memoirs and interviews of the Peace Corps volunteers who served in Turkey to display their image of Turkey in the 1960s. In reflection of his social responsibility consciousness, this writer discusses in his texts the necessity of building a society according to neo-traditional forms, without departing from the principle of “useful information”. Acknowledging the advantages of popularization Ahmet Mithat Efendi takes advantage of opportunities provided by the media, in his production of series of novels and stories which depict his view of ideal social order and his conceptualization of modern identities for both men and women. Through such works, and by using media as a channel, he aims to be accessible to all sectors of society and share his views on ideal traditional-modern femininity – masculinity forms. In other words, while reproducing tradition according to Western criteria, his primary goal is to reorganize gender relations. Features of traditional narration function as a vehicle for the author, onto which he transposes the images of men and women who will lead society. Thus, Ahmet Mithat Efendi, aware of the limitations of his contemporary readership and of traditional forms of narrative, inserted his view of ideal gender roles into fictional texts. The writer employs humor for the purpose of combining his view of a new social order with gender identity in his literary texts. Humorous elements contribute both to constructing the text and to determining an ideal gender perception; people and phenomena, though depicted in humorous ways, display a social acceptance of gender roles. In this context, during the Tanzimat period the behavior of the Ottoman citizen and readers’ perceptions of gender identities are shaped according to Western norms Ahmet Mithat Efendi promotes such influences within his fictional works of and he uses humor as a tool to help convince his readership of his ideas.Item Open Access Analyzing the early republican ideology with specific reference to the Turkish literature : 1930-1945(Bilkent University, 2000) Birler, R. O.This study examines contemporary meanings and uses of the mosque in Turkey by arguing that productive architectural plans require understanding both the socio-historical development of the mosque and the socio-political transformations that have led to the mosque's current position in society. Mosque space is conceptualized as a physical environment that cultivates the formation and transformation of individual, social, and collective memories. The study questions whether the mosque still exhibits the qualities of a social space and whether new and innovative mosque designs reflect - programmatically, architecturally, and spatially - transformations related to their current uses and social meanings. These questions are explored through interviews, two questionnaires, and a worksheet, all of which involve a case study of Dogramacizade Mosque in Ankara. On one hand, the findings underscore the changing relationship between Muslim women and mosque space as a result of the transformation of congregations into citizens of a contemporary secular nation and suggest that spatial designs of mosques should take present-day behaviors and practices into consideration rather than ignoring this social aspect through which transformations occur. On the other hand, the collective memory of congregation members resists changing the allocation of prayer halls in the mosque. Members are in favor of continuing the traditional layout of separated spaces based on gender differences. The resistance implies that collective memory changes much slower than behaviors or lifestyles in terms of gender issues. Additionally, parallel to the findings, modernization of the mosque brings forth the idea of resurrecting the mosque s historical form as a social complex that fundamentally conflicts with secularity.Item Restricted Dünya çapında tanınmış bir orkestra şefi: “Cem Mansur”(Bilkent University, 2021) Ataberk, Emin; Duran, Hasan Deniz; Öztürk, Mustafa Baran; Uçar, Simge; Ünal, TunçÇok sesli müzik, Cumhuriyetin getirdiği inkılaplarla birlikte batılılaşma ve modernleşme yolunda önemli bir adım olarak görülmüştür. Throughout its life, Hagia Sophia represented the power of Christianity and Islam respectively under the Byzantines and the Ottomans. This paper analyzes the conversion of Hagia Sophia from a mosque to a museum in 1935, concentrating on the overarching events fueling the change and the aftermath for the modern Turkish Republic in its pursuit of secularism. The association between the conversion and the ideologies of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is also studied to understand the social and political reforms of the country. The primary sources such as newspaper articles from that era, official government documents, and archeological reports regarding the relics in Hagia Sophia facilitated the discussion around the core of the conversion and its legitimacy. Meanwhile, to comprehend the significance of Hagia Sophia and the overall historical context, a variety of secondary sources are used. The background on the events preceding the conversion elucidates the underlying reasons for the reactions of society. While its architectural history and significance are discussed to understand the multi-faceted masterpiece, the domestic political reception and the portrayal of the process in the international media are brought up to stimulate the connection of the musealization to the new secularist principles.Item Restricted II. Item Restricted Köy Enstitüsü vizyonu ışığında bir eğitimci: Cafer Mete(Bilkent University, 2021) Evran, Müge; Çolak, Necati Furkan; Özer, Dicle; Aksoy, Ahmet Oğul; Kavuncuoğlu, YetkinCumhuriyet’in ilanı ile birlikte Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin himayesi altındaki bütün bölgelere eğitim olanaklarını ulaştırmaya yönelik çalışmalar başlamıştır. People were confused over issues of marriage, divorce, alimony, and inheritance. Muslim jurists and politicians thus eventually became aware of the need for change in Islamic family law. Besides, legal modernization and the use of law as a tool for social control—for the processes of nation building, the creation of the Ottoman citizen, and the establishment of a new family structure—in the late Ottoman Empire had changed the Ottoman legal culture and required a reform in all areas of Islamic law including the family law. Despite their importance, the issues of family law remain understudied for the late Ottoman Empire. The general historiography focuses on visible political institutions, diplomatic events, and intellectual currents. Besides, an equation of the West with progress and modernity and of the East with stagnation and tradition, which still dominates much of the discussion on family law reform, obscures the possible explanations. Hence, the main objective of this work is the presentation and exploration of the legal, political, sociocultural, and economic contexts of the family law reform and the reformed law’s application in the new Ottoman legal culture to examine the compatibility between legal innovation and the needs of state and society.Item Open Access Marriage and divorce in the late Ottoman Empire: social upheaval, women’s rights, and the need for new family law(Sage Publications, 2014) Altinbaş, N.A revision of family law became necessary in the late Ottoman Empire for several reasons. The sociocultural and economic landscape was transformed; war forced poor Muslim women who had lost their husbands into destitution; and the Ottoman state led by the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) was motivated by ideological concerns to push for new family and gender arrangements. Women's journals published in Istanbul along with official state documents in the late Ottoman Empire (1910-1917) are here explored for insights into this, afforded by the changing lives and perceptions of late Ottoman Istanbulites, leading to the conclusion that these combined with as well as reflected the various upheavals and movements of the time to prompt the legislative change. © 2013 The Author(s).
