Item Open Access Accurate isolation networks in quadrature couplers and power dividers(IEEE, 2021) Sütbaş, Batuhan; Özbay, Ekmel; Atalar, AbdullahWhen quadrature couplers and power dividers are implemented in integrated circuits, accurate isolation networks can not be realized due to the nonideal resistors and the process variations. We present an isolation network design technique which cancels the resistor parasitic effects and also increases the tolerance to variations in the resistance values. A Lange coupler and a power divider are designed at Ka-band using the proposed accurate and process-tolerant isolation networks. The improvement is analytically shown and empirically verified with our in-house GaN-based microstrip MMIC process. For the coupler, the measured return losses and isolation are better than 20 dB from DC to 40 GHz. The power divider achieves 20 dB return losses and isolation in a fractional bandwidth of 50%. Both devices maintain 20 dB performance even when the variation in sheet resistance is as high as 30%.Item Embargo Evaluation of spaciousness in isolated and confined environments(Bilkent University, 2023-12) Diker, BerkThis thesis explores the adverse psychological effects of Isolated, Confined, and Extreme (ICE) environments, aiming to explore the correlation between these effects and interior architectural elements. In addition, several methods are tested to evaluate interior architectural elements that may directly impact the perceived spaciousness of these environments. The initial phase of the thesis examined the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the perception of interior spaces. Individuals who found their living spaces visually appealing, engaged in various activities, expressed satisfaction with their connections to outdoor spaces, encountered less boredom, and displayed fewer signs of anxiety and psychological distress. The following phase explored the effects of furniture, lighting, surface texture, and ceiling height on spaciousness perception and surveyed emotional and aesthetic responses to various design factors. The results indicated that interior architectural elements have a relatively minor impact on individuals' spatial perception within a habitat. Design training is a more significant influencer in all spatial evaluations than interior architectural elements. Although furniture, lighting, and texture have statistically significant effects on spaciousness and aesthetic judgments, design training remains a substantial moderator of these effects. This research contributes substantially to comprehending the complex dynamics between interior architectural design and human perception. The findings underscore the profound influence of design choices on practical functionality and emotional experiences within confined spaces. The study's implications extend to architects, designers, and policymakers, providing valuable insights for enhancing psychological well-being in ICE environments.Item Open Access Lewis' Reduction of Modality(2011) Berkovski, S.I start by reconsidering two familiar arguments against modal realism. The argument from epistemology relates to the issue whether we can infer the existence of concrete objects by a priori means. The argument from pragmatics purports to refute the analogy between the indispensability of possible worlds and the indispensability of unobserved entities in physical science and of numbers in mathematics. Then I present two novel objections. One focusses on the obscurity of the notion of isolation required by modal realism. The other stresses the arbitrary nature of the rules governing the behaviour of Lewisean universes. All four objections attack the reductive analysis of modality that is supposed to be the chief merit of modal realism.Item Open Access The poetic geography(Bilkent University, 1999) Türkyılmaz, MürüvvetIn this study, Dada and Surrealism movements are analysed and compared with each other in accordance with historical, social, economical and political conditions. Especially, the techniques of Automatic Writing and Automatic Drawing in Surrealism movement are researched and explained the differences of usage in my works. Dada is analysed as an attitude and the relationship between Dada and my works are handled in the frame of his attitude. This attitude accepts art and life together. The influences of the I. World War bring the exploration of Dada. This exploration implies the feeling of isolation or loneliness in the fragmented geography. The similar conditions are seen n this century which people consume in faster span of life and which all borders have been passed on the map. At this point, Dada attitude and the attitude in my works are analysed on the same level.Item Open Access Screening and selection of novel animal probiotics isolated from bovine chyme(2013) Ozkan, A.D.; Han, D.; Umu O.C.O.; Angun P.; Senturk, B.; Yasa O.; Tekinay, T.Probiotics, gut-colonizing microorganisms capable of conferring a number of health benefits to their hosts, are highly desirable as animal feed supplements. Members of the Gram-positive genus Bacillus are often utilized as probiotics, since endospores formed by those bacteria render them highly resistant to environmental extremes and therefore capable of surviving gastrointestinal tract conditions. In this study, 84 distinct bacterial colonies were obtained from bovine chyme and 29 isolates were determined as Bacillus species. These isolates were principally screened for their antimicrobial activity against a group of two Gram-positive and fourGram-negative bacteria, including known human and animal pathogens such as Salmonella enterica, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Seven strains displaying strong antimicrobial activity against the test cohort were further evaluated for other properties desirable from animal probiotics, including high spore-forming capacity and adhesiveness, resistance to pH extremes and ability to form biofilms. The isolates were found to resist simulated gastrointestinal conditions and most of the antibiotics tested. In addition, plasmid presence was checked and cytotoxicity tests were performed to evaluate the potential risks of antibiotic resistance transfer and unintended pathogenic effects on host, respectively. We propose that the bacterial isolates are suitable for use as animal probiotics. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg and the University of Milan 2012.
