Item Open Access Comparative analysis of biology textbooks with regard to cellular respiration and photosynthesis(Bilkent University, 2012) İnanç Gök, TuğbaThe topics of cellular respiration and photosynthesis in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and Ministry of National Education (MEB) biology textbooks were analysed and compared with regard to content, presentation and learning strategies by using content analysis as a research method. Interviews were conducted with five practising biology teachers. Both textbooks follow a general to specific (deductive) order in the topics and have similar features in terms of readability and typography. The assessment strategies of neither textbooks focus on measuring higher order cognitive levels. The differences between the two textbooks are prominent in the content, presence and absence of major themes, number of student-centred activities, real life connections and use of technology. The MEB textbook had more comprehensive content but with many details which were not appropriate for the students‘ level. While the IBDP textbook included all major themes in the two topics, the MEB textbook lacked some important ones. The MEB textbook is richer in terms of student-centred activities, experiments and real life connections. The IBDP textbook is richer in terms of technology. The findings of the content analysis were supported by the ideas of the practising teachers.Item Open Access A comparative analysis of ecology units in the biology textbooks of secondary school programs(Bilkent University, 2013) Ödün, SinemThe purpose of this study was analyze and compare ecology units in four Ministry of National Education (Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı, MEB) biology textbooks, International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) biology textbook and International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) biology textbook in terms of content, presentation and learning. Content analysis was used as a research method and interviews were conducted with biology teachers. The analysis of the ecology-related unit content of textbooks showed that MEB textbooks cover large numbers of life connections and interdisciplinary treatments which makes MEB textbooks advantageous over the other two textbooks. From the perspective of presentation, the IGCSE textbook is the only textbook that has teachers’ resource kit. The other advantageous point is presenting bite-size information, a chunking. The IBDP textbook contains lots of links to a website that makes textbook interact with technology. Regarding learning, the ecology units of MEB textbooks rank higher hierarchy than IBDP and IGCSE textbooks. MEB textbooks present the most friendly language style. Moreover, MEB textbooks support students with activities and, variety of questions.Item Open Access The effectiveness of creativity, activity, service (CAS) professional development in Turkey(Bilkent University, 2017-04) Yazgan, EzgiThis research aimed to explore the effect of professional development for the implementation and student learning outcomes in Turkey for the international curricula known as Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). The research design was pre/post-test intervention design. The study explored students’ and teachers’ perceptions on CAS by pre-survey before the professional development workshop and webinars. After the survey, a workshop and two follow-up webinars were conducted with teachers and students. Participants prepared some school-wide improvement plans for CAS and tried to implement them over 7 months. Then, the study investigated whether these workshop and webinars had an effect on the CAS program by conducting a post-survey 7 months after schools’ implementing their CAS improvement plans. In addition to the student and teacher surveys, data were collected by observations during the workshop and webinars and feedback forms were filled out by participants. Surveys were divided into subsections to see the effect in different ways. Paired sample t-test and Wilcoxon signed-ranked test were used to compare any possible improvements across the schools. Results indicated that there was almost no significant effect of professional development on CAS. Feedback of participants was mostly positive about workshop and webinars and all participants found them useful to develop CAS implementation, and most promising in the overall impact of the PD program studied were the findings from the final survey of open-ended questions that reported on actual actions taken by six participating schools. Due to promising practice shown in the actions the schools were able to take, recommendations are made for further studies that expand on these initial findings.Item Open Access Representation of different cultures in IBDP language B literary texts(Bilkent University, 2015) Maden, SinemEnglish is one of the languages taught in International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as a Language B course. English includes examples of culture within itself as it is the most widespread language in the world (Nault, 2006). International Baccalaureate has the objectives of “developing students’ intercultural understanding” and “encouraging, through the study of texts and through social interaction, an awareness and appreciation of the different perspectives of people from other cultures” in English courses (IB, 2011). This study explored the cultural elements embedded in sample literary texts studied in IBDP Language B English courses, Fahrenheit 451 and The Catcher in the Rye. These literary texts were analyzed by using content analysis within the conceptual framework of the Standards for Foreign Language Learning (Appendix A) which was originally designed by US Department of Education and the National Endowment in 1996 and was adopted by Yuen (2011) by using another category from the study of Moran (as cited in Yuen, 2011). The results of the study showed that American and British cultures are frequently represented in sample texts in addition to appearance of some other cultures. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that there is a need to reevaluate the use of these literary texts considering the aims of the programme.Item Open Access Student perceptions of successful learning support for an international high school programme: a comparative case study in Turkey(Routledge, 2019) Dulun, Öykü; Lane, Jennie F.; Ateşkan, ArmağanThis study used comparative case study methodology to investigate student perceptions of different programmes that prepare them for a challenging high school education programme: the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Given the benefits and challenges of the programme, educators and stakeholders want to ensure students feel ready to participate. In the literature, studies support that programmes such as the International General Certificate of Secondary Education and the International Baccalaureate Organisation’s Middle Years Programme prepare students for the IBDP; however, there is a need for students’ voices on how they perceive they are prepared through these programmes. This study investigated three different approaches to IBDP preparation by gaining student insights through a scaled-item questionnaire and interviews. Students identified experiences that gave them skills to monitor their learning and resources that motivated them to participate in an advanced upper-high school programme.Item Restricted Student perceptions of successful preparation for IBDP: implications for developing 21st century skills(Bilkent University, 2018-05) Dulun, ÖyküThis dissertation used comparative case study methodology to investigate student perceptions of how they were prepared for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The study focused on students in grades 9 and 10 from three different cases. One case involved students who were prepared through the Turkish national curriculum, a second through the International General Certificate of Secondary Education and the third with the International Baccalaureate Organisation’s Middle Years Programme. Questionnaires and focus group interviews were used to gain student insights about how each approach developed their learning strategies and affected their dispositions. Students were also asked about their critical thinking skills. Further understanding of students’ critical thinking skills was learned by examining samples of their work. These particular attributes were investigated because of their relevance to 21st century skills that are needed for a sustainable future. The study revealed that students from all three cases had positive perceptions of their learning experiences in grades 9 and 10. They especially credited their language classes with providing them opportunities to think independently and creatively. Students emphasized the importance of developing their communication skills in addition to critical thinking. Students from the national programme and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education indicated they felt more confident preparing for exams. The International Baccalaureate Organisation’s Middle Years Programme provided students with more opportunities for research and to think independently. Implications for improving preparation for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme are provided based on students’ insights. In addition to preparing students for a rigorous upper high school programme, developing 21st century skills, such as critical thinking and communication, will better ensure they will be able to contribute to a sustainable future.Item Open Access Students' performance, skills and perspectives on the combination of national and international curricula for university education in Turkey(Bilkent University, 2016-05) Sagun, SılaThis study explores the university preparedness of students who were educated through an international high school education program in Turkey. Within a theoretical framework, which discusses the complexity of the combination of different curricula, the effect of the implementation of an international program in a national program on student outcomes is also investigated. The study compares the academic performance and skills of students who followed the national program (NP) with students who followed both the national program and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP). A mixed method research with convergent parallel design was selected to examine the perceptions of students and faculty members, as well as the quantitative data on students‟ numerical scores. The quantitative data including university cGPAs, individual university course grades, university entrance exam scores, four-year graduation rates and international high school program diploma scores were analysed statistically to explore the difference between NP and DP students. The quantitative data on skills were collected by an online questionnaire and critical thinking skills tests. The qualitative data, collected through focus group discussions and individual interviews with students and faculty members, revealed the differences between the two groups of students. In total, the numerical scores of 761 students from four universities in Turkey were used. 72 students participated in the study for qualitative data collection. Five faculty members from various departments were interviewed individually. The results showed that the DP students had higher university cGPAs and higher individual course grades at university. They also had a higher graduation rate after four years at university, it was nearly three times that of the NP group. Focus group discussions and individual interviews further clarified the differences between the academic performance and skills of each group. Overall, the study found that the international high school education program seemed to develop a better student profile for university life.
