Item Open Access The construction of beauty by mobile applications(Bilkent University, 2016-09) Baş, BurçakAs a highly complex, intriguing and contested matter incorporating a variety of meanings at different dimensions, beauty has long been of interest to scholars. Prior research that approached beauty as a socially constructed phenomenon has often pointed to the conceptualization of beauty around the normative ideals of whiteness, thinness and youth for the female subject, and mostly focused on and underlined the role of traditional media in reinforcing and disseminating these ideals. As new media constituting a crucial part among the recent developments in digital technologies and characterized by interactivity, mobile applications contemporarily play a role in the construction of beauty with their promise of a novel way to experience beauty. Yet, little interest has been shown in their sociocultural analysis, and both the construction of beauty by mobile applications and the role of interactivity in this construction are yet to be explored. In its aim to redress this gap, this thesis (1) engages in the critical sociocultural analysis of mobile applications by evaluating them as “sociocultural artefacts” and (2) adopts the theoretical framework of The Social Construction of Reality as proposed by Berger and Luckmann (1991) and further follows McLuhan’s (1994) dictum that “the medium is the message” as it focuses on mobile applications in comparison and contrast to the traditional beauty media of magazines and discusses the role and impact of the interactivity of new media as implicated in the construction of beauty by mobile applications.Item Open Access Design of an interactive sequential graphic system on cyber-space(Bilkent University, 2000) Atasoy, BerkeThe aim of this study is to explore and discuss the possibility of an interactive sequential system on World Wide Web. It is an attempt to formulate a definition for a system, which utilises different mediums like text, image and audio in the standards of World Wide Web with a motive for generating a sequential art product in the cyber-space. The study discusses a software model, which offers a set of actions in which the user can participate in the development process of the system by creating and combining different media.Item Open Access Education in interactive media: a survey on the potentials of computers for visual literacy(Bilkent University, 1996) Güleryüz, HakanThis study aims at investigating the potentials of multimedia and computers in design. For this purpose, a general survey on the historical development of computers for their use in education and possibilities related to the use of technology in education is conducted. Based on this survey, the depictions related to the incorporation of technology in design education in particular are compiled for the purpose of producing an example of multimedia application. The application uses the actual student projects of FA101 Basic Design course offered in the Graphic Design Department curriculum of Bilkent University, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.Item Open Access Impacts of the immersive interface design model on the image-spectator interaction in new media(Bilkent University, 2007) Özkul, DidemThis study mainly analyzes the major derive for the spectators to interact with the images in new media in terms of its psychological and physical functions. Firstly, these reasons underlying these functions are examined as derives for the experience of presence. Although the major connotation of the word presence is physical presence, the psychological aspect of presence is also regarded as a part of immersion and interaction in new media. Secondly, The Apparatus Model, which is a transparent interface design model, is analyzed in terms of a tool that improves the interactivity between the spectator and the image in new media. Finally, a more detailed discussion is made on the constraints for interaction, and how this ideological model can overcome these constraints.Item Open Access Lignum Vitae: an interactive organism design of cyberspace and sonic arts(Bilkent University, 2020-06) Erçevik, EceThis thesis aims to investigate the nature of artworks created in the scope of cyberspace and sonic art in analysis of the case artwork Lignum Vitae, a multimedia artwork designed to be conducted in gallery space through sonic interactivity. In light of Moholy-Nagy’s Theater of Totality (Moholy-Nagy, 1924) , the depiction of artwork as organism is closely observed and represented through the multi disciplinary aspects of Lignum Vitae, along which the responsiveness of the artwork towards human interaction is explored.
