Item Open Access Analysis of a decentralized supply chain under partial cooperation(2005) Güllü, R.; Van Houtum G. J.; Sargut F. Z.; Erkip, N.In this article, we analyze a decentralized supply chain consisting of a supplier and two independent retailers. In each order cycle, retailers place their orders at the supplier to minimize inventory-related expected costs at the end of their respective response times. There are two types of lead times involved. At the end of the supplier lead time, retailers are given an opportunity to readjust their initial orders (without changing the total order size), so that both retailers can improve their expected costs at the end of respective retailer lead times (the time it takes for items to be shipped from the supplier to the retailers). Because of the possibility of cooperation at the end of supplier lead time, each retailer will consider the other's order-up-to level in making the ordering decision. Under mild conditions, we prove the existence of a unique Nash equilibrium for the retailer order-up-to levels, and show that they can be obtained by solving a set of newsboy-like equations. We also present computational analysis that provides valuable managerial insight for design and operation of decentralized systems under the possibility of partial cooperation.Item Open Access Job shop scheduling with beam search(Elsevier Science B.V., Amsterdam, Netherlands, 1999) Sabuncuoglu I.; Bayiz, M.Beam Search is a heuristic method for solving optimization problems. It is an adaptation of the branch and bound method in which only some nodes are evaluated in the search tree. At any level, only the promising nodes are kept for further branching and remaining nodes are pruned off permanently. In this paper, we develop a beam search based scheduling algorithm for the job shop problem. Both the makespan and mean tardiness are used as the performance measures. The proposed algorithm is also compared with other well known search methods and dispatching rules for a wide variety of problems. The results indicate that the beam search technique is a very competitive and promising tool which deserves further research in the scheduling literature.Item Open Access Managerial motivation dynamics and incentives(2007) Kocabıyıkoğlu, A.; Popescu, I.Firms can increase profitability by appropriately motivating managers. We investigate drivers of managerial motivation, and propose how firms can use performance pay to alter motivational patterns. We focus on the agent's optimal effort decision in trading off compensation utility with effort cost in a static and dynamic setting. Surprisingly, we find that lower risk aversion or increased pay are not necessarily motivating factors, and identify the relevant effort drivers underlying the agent's utility and compensation plan. We characterize properties of agents' preferences for output lotteries (risk aversion, aggressiveness, prudence) that trigger systematic motivational patterns with respect to a variety of factors, such as the agent's productivity and past performance, time to evaluation, the firm's capabilities, and market factors. Our insights are robust, holding under very general modeling assumptions on preferences, rewards, and the stochastic effort-output function.Item Open Access Moderating effects of climate and external support on transformational leadership and technological innovation: An investigation in creative ventures in Turkey(IEEE, 2006) Gümüsluoğlu, Lale T.; Ilsev, A.The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of transformational leadership on technological innovation at the organizational level. Specifically, it was proposed that transformational leadership would have a positive effect on organizational innovation. Furthermore, this effect was proposed to be moderated by an innovation-supporting climate and support received from external organizations. These relationships were tested on 163 R&D personnel and managers of 43 micro- and small-sized Turkish entrepreneurial software development companies. The results confirmed the positive impact of transformational leadership on organizational innovation, which was measured with a market-oriented criterion developed specifically for developing countries and newly developing industries. Furthermore, the relationship between transformational leadership and organizational innovation was stronger when external support was at high levels than when there was no external support. The moderating effect of an innovation-supporting climate was not significant. Managerial implications as well as policy recommendations are provided, for micro and small-sized enterprises in particular. (c) 2006 PICMET.Item Open Access SPM management using markov chain based data access prediction(IEEE, 2008-11) Yemliha, T.; Srikantaiah, S.; Kandemir, M.; Öztürk, ÖzcanLeveraging the power of scratchpad memories (SPMs) available in most embedded systems today is crucial to extract maximum performance from application programs. While regular accesses like scalar values and array expressions with affine subscript functions have been tractable for compiler analysis (to be prefetched into SPM), irregular accesses like pointer accesses and indexed array accesses have not been easily amenable for compiler analysis. This paper presents an SPM management technique using Markov chain based data access prediction for such irregular accesses. Our approach takes advantage of inherent, but hidden reuse in data accesses made by irregular references. We have implemented our proposed approach using an optimizing compiler. In this paper, we also present a thorough comparison of our different dynamic prediction schemes with other SPM management schemes. SPM management using our approaches produces 12.7% to 28.5% improvements in performance across a range of applications with both regular and irregular access patterns, with an average improvement of 20.8%.
