Item Open Access The hazardous waste location-routing problem(Bilkent University, 2003) Alumur, SibelAs a result of high industrialization and technology hazardous waste management problem has now become an unavoidable problem of the world. Hazardous waste management involves collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of hazardous wastes. In this thesis, the existing models in the literature are analyzed in terms of applicability. A new multiobjective location-routing model is proposed by combining the applicable aspects from different models. Our model also includes the constraints that reflect certain requirements that have been observed in the literature but could not been incorporated into the models correctly together with the additional constraints that we propose. The aim of the model is to decide on the following questions: where to open treatment centers with which technologies, where to open disposal centers, how to route different types of hazardous wastes to which of the compatible treatment technologies, and how to route waste residues to disposal centers. The model has two objectives of minimizing total cost and minimizing transportation risk. A large scale implementation of the model in the Central Anatolian Region of Turkey is presented.Item Open Access Hazardous waste management problem: the case for incineration(Elsevier, 2007) Emek, E.; Kara, B. Y.We define the hazardous waste management problem as the combined decisions of selecting the disposal method, siting the disposal plants and deciding on the waste flow structure. The hazardous waste management problem has additional requirements depending on the selected disposal method. In this paper we focus on incineration, for which the main additional requirement is to satisfy the air pollution standards imposed by the governmental restrictions. We propose a cost-based mathematical model in which the satisfaction of air pollution standards is also incorporated. We used the Gaussian Plume equation in measuring the air pollution concentrations at population centers. A large-scale implementation of the proposed model within Turkey is provided.Item Open Access Hazardous waste management system design under population and environmental impact considerations(Academic Press, 2017) Yilmaz, O.; Kara, B. Y.; Yetis, U.This paper presents a multi objective mixed integer location/routing model that aims to minimize transportation cost and risks for large-scale hazardous waste management systems (HWMSs). Risks induced by hazardous wastes (HWs) on both public and the environment are addressed. For this purpose, a new environmental impact definition is proposed that considers the environmentally vulnerable elements including water bodies, agricultural areas, coastal regions and forestlands located within a certain bandwidth around transportation routes. The solution procedure yields to Pareto optimal curve for two conflicting objectives. The conceptual model developed prior to mathematical formulation addresses waste-to-technology compatibility and HW processing residues to assure applicability of the model to real-life HWMSs. The suggested model was used in a case study targeting HWMS in Turkey. Based on the proposed solution, it was possible to identify not only the transportation routes but also a set of information on HW handling facilities including the types, locations, capacities, and investment/operational cost. We investigate all related issues in the hazardous waste management from each institution’s perspective. We define the hazardous waste management problem as the combined decisions of selecting the disposal method, siting the selected disposal plant, deciding on the waste flow structure and satisfying any other criteria required by any of the interested institutions. We develop a new unified mathematical model. In order to satisfy law and legislation requirements the incorporation of the Gaussian plume model into our unified model is also accomplished. A large scale implementation into regions of Turkey is provided.
