Item Open Access Capacity bounds for an ultra-wideband channel model(IEEE, 2004-10) Arıkan, ErdalThere is an ongoing effort by the IEEE 802.15.3a subcommittee to reach a UWB personal area network standard. We estimate the achievable rates for such networks using a channel model specified by the same group. The analysis of this channel model is of interest in light of recent information-theoretic work on multipath fading channels which show that in order to take full advantage of such channels' capacity the transmitted signals have to be "peaky" in a certain sense. The immense bandwidth of the UWB channel also suggests at first that peaky signals should be used. However, unlike the many other wireless systems where the transmitter energy is limited, in the UWB channel only the power spectral density of the transmitted signal is constrained. As a result, the signal power can grow in proportion to the utilized bandwidth and peaky signals are not needed. © 2004 IEEE.Item Open Access Noncoherent space-time coding: an algebraic perspective(IEEE, 2005-06) El Gamal, H.; Aktas, D.; Damen, M. O.The design of space-time signals for noncoherent block-fading channels where the channel state information is not known a priori at the transmitter and the receiver is considered. In particular, a new algebraic formulation for the diversity advantage design criterion is developed. The new criterion encompasses, as a special case, the well-known diversity advantage for unitary space-time signals and, more importantly, applies to arbitrary signaling schemes and arbitrary channel distributions. This criterion is used to establish the optimal diversity-versus-rate tradeoff for training based schemes in block-fading channels. Our results are then specialized to the class of affine space-time signals which allows for a low complexity decoder. Within this class, space-time constellations based on the threaded algebraic space-time (TAST) architecture are considered. These constellations achieve the optimal diversity-versus-rate tradeoff over noncoherent block-fading channels and outperform previously proposed codes in the considered scenarios as demonstrated by the numerical results. Using the analytical and numerical results developed in this paper, nonunitary space-time codes are argued to offer certain advantages in block-fading channels where the appropriate use of coherent space-time codes is shown to offer a very efficient solution to the noncoherent space-time communication paradigm.Item Open Access Performance analysis of turbo codes over Rician fading channels with impulsive noise(IEEE, 2007) Ali, Syed Amjad; Ince, E.A.The statistical characteristics of impulsive noise differ greatly from those of Gaussian noise. Hence, the performance of conventional decoders, optimized for additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels is not promising in non-Gaussian environments. In order to achieve improved performance in impulsive environments the decoder structure needs to be modified in accordance with the impulsive noise model. This paper provides performance analysis of turbo codes over fully interleaved Rician fading channels with Middleton's additive white Class-A impulsive noise (MAWCAIN). Simulation results for the memoryless Rician fading channels using coherent BPSK signaling for both the cases of ideal channel state information (ICSI) and no channel state information (NCSI) at the decoder are provided. An eight state turbo encoder having (1, 13/15, 13/15) generator polynomial is used throughout the analysis. The novelty of this work lies in the fact that this is an initial attempt to provide a detailed analysis of turbo codes over Rician fading channels with impulsive noise rather than AWGN. ©2007 IEEE.Item Open Access Positioning algorithms for cooperative networks in the presence of an unknown turn-around time(IEEE, 2011) Gholami, M.R.; Gezici, Sinan; Ström, E.G.; Rydström, M.This paper addresses the problem of single node positioning in cooperative network using hybrid two-way time-of-arrival and time-difference-of-arrival where, the turn-around time at the target node is unknown. Considering the turn-around time as a nuisance parameter, the derived maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) brings a difficult global optimization problem due to local minima in the cost function of the MLE. To avoid drawbacks in solving the MLE, we obtain a linear two-step estimator using non-linear pre-processing which is algebraic and closed-form in each step. To compare different methods, Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) is derived. Simulation results confirm that the proposed linear estimator attains the CRLB for sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratios. Item Open Access Time-delay estimation in multiple-input single-output systems(IEEE, 2010) Koçak, Fatih; Gezici, SinanIn this paper, the time-delay estimation problem is studied for multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems. First, a theoretical analysis is carried out by deriving the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for time-delay estimation in a MISO system. Then, the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for the time-delay parameter is obtained, which results in a complex optimization problem in general. In order to provide a solution of the ML estimator with low computational complexity, ML estimation based on a genetic global optimization algorithm, namely, differential evolution (DE), is proposed. Simulation studies for various fading scenarios are performed to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm. ©2010 IEEE.
