Item Open Access A comparative analysis of ecology units in the biology textbooks of secondary school programs(Bilkent University, 2013) Ödün, SinemThe purpose of this study was analyze and compare ecology units in four Ministry of National Education (Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı, MEB) biology textbooks, International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) biology textbook and International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) biology textbook in terms of content, presentation and learning. Content analysis was used as a research method and interviews were conducted with biology teachers. The analysis of the ecology-related unit content of textbooks showed that MEB textbooks cover large numbers of life connections and interdisciplinary treatments which makes MEB textbooks advantageous over the other two textbooks. From the perspective of presentation, the IGCSE textbook is the only textbook that has teachers’ resource kit. The other advantageous point is presenting bite-size information, a chunking. The IBDP textbook contains lots of links to a website that makes textbook interact with technology. Regarding learning, the ecology units of MEB textbooks rank higher hierarchy than IBDP and IGCSE textbooks. MEB textbooks present the most friendly language style. Moreover, MEB textbooks support students with activities and, variety of questions.Item Open Access A comparative analysis of quadratics in mathematics textbooks from Turkey, Singapore, and the international baccalaureate diploma programme(Bilkent University, 2012) Sağlam, ReyhanThe purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the chapters on quadratics in three mathematics textbooks selected from Turkey, Singapore, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) in terms of content, organization, and presentation style through content analysis. The analysis of mathematical content showed that the Turkish textbook covers a greater number of learning outcomes targeted for quadratics in the three mathematics syllabi, in a more detailed way compared to the other two textbooks. The organization of mathematical knowledge reflects an inductive approach in the Turkish textbook from quadratic equations to functions, whereas the Singaporean and IBDP-SL (Standard Level) textbooks present mathematical concepts in a deductive way from quadratic functions to equations. Regarding presentation style, the Turkish and IBDP-SL textbooks are rich in studentcentered activities compared to the Singaporean textbook. While the IBDP-SL textbook gives opportunities to students to make investigations and reach generalizations, the Turkish textbook presents mathematical concepts in a readymade way. The IBDP-SL textbook is also the one which uses real-life connections and technology the most. In addition, the IBDP-SL textbook uses problems with moderate complexity more frequently than the other two textbooks where the problems with low complexity are dominant. This study revealed that each mathematics textbook has different priorities, and the approaches in the three textbooks were interpreted in the light of reader-oriented theory (Weinberg & Wiesner, 2011) and Rezat’s (2006) model of textbook use.Item Open Access A content analysis of Turkish national high school health education curriculum using the health education curriculum analysis tool (HECAT)*(Ankara University, 2021-01-15) Serin, Volkan; Ateşkan, ArmağanHealth education helps students to promote their mental, social and physical well-being. Health educators follow a specific curriculum for health promotion in the high schools of Turkey. This study compared Turkish national high school health education curriculum (HEC) which is delivered at grade 9 with the health education curriculum analysis tool (HECAT) used in the United States. Recommendations for possible new K-12 health education curriculum and for existing and further grade 9 curricula to improve was also given. Content analysis was used as a research method. In this research, an appraisal strength table was created which was adapted from HECAT in order to compare the curricula. Only 45 objectives in the national curriculum were found compatible with 1802 expectations of HECAT (correspondence rates: 6% for all grades and 7% for grades 9-12). Furthermore, the most represented level according to Bloom’s revised taxonomy cognitive domains was understanding, whereas applying was minimum represented level in HEC. The findings also indicate that health education delivery grades and contents should be expanded immediately in Turkey same as in the U.S. due to several reasons emerged recent years on health. Moreover, this research suggests to form Turkish national health education standards (TNHES) for K-12 education and draft TNHES were shared in this study.Item Open Access The future of macromarketing: recommendations based on a content analysis of the past twelve years of the journal of macromarketing(SAGE Publications, 2020-10-16) Ekici, Ahmet; Genç, Tuğçe Özgen; Çelik, HafizeIn their essays published in the Silver Anniversary Issue (SAI) of the Journal of Macromarketing (2006), George Fisk and Mark Peterson independently outlined the current state of the discipline and made a list of visionary recommendations that would help macromarketers adapt and respond to the changing markets, marketing, and societies. These recommendations ranged from repositioning the discipline around the ideas of societal development to leading the way across disciplines toward achieving a sustainable world. Based on a thorough content analysis of the articles published in the Journal of Macromarketing since the SAI, we aim to report the extent to which macromarketing scholarship has responded to the recommendations of Fisk and Peterson. Utilizing the findings, we make a list of new recommendations that can assist macromarketers in fulfilling their mission of ‘saving the world’.Item Open Access Managing pandemic communication online Turkish Ministry of Health’s digital communication strategies during COVID-19(University of Southern California, 2023) Aksak Özdora, Emel; Dikmen, E. Ş.; Kılıç, N. P.Health ministries around the world have used online communication, specifically social media platforms, to provide information, communicate warnings to the public, and influence behavior according to recommended health precautions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Grounded in agenda-setting theory, this study analyzes Turkey’s Ministry of Health’s (MoH) social media communication strategies and practices during COVID-19 through a content analysis of the content shared via its official Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts from February to June 2020, focusing on the first 120 days of the pandemic, when it was at its height. Findings reveal that the MoH’s social media activity was mainly driven by Twitter, and the minister of health has become the face of the fight against the pandemic. Results reveal that the government’s efforts to fight against the virus and its prevention measures are among the most popular themes in online communication. The MoH’s social media communication has shown only limited success in community building and network expansion due to inconsistent and ineffective hashtag use, among other weaknesses in the ministry’s use of social media conventions.Item Open Access Migrant representation within british and dutch political systems(Bilkent University, 2015-08) Çavuş, Nermin AydemirThis research aimed to analyze how often, in what ways and under which conditions MPs of migrant origin addressed the cultural and religious rights and freedoms of ethnic and religious groups. A content analysis was conducted on parliamentary questions to achieve this aim. The cases of the Netherlands and the UK are analyzed within a time period between 2002 and 2012. The research follows the ‘political opportunity structures’ approach in analyzing available opportunities and constraints of political and institutional environments in the above-mentioned two cases. Taking recent trends in the neo-institutionalist understanding into consideration, the study also incorporates the idea of ‘discursive opportunities’ into the general frame of political opportunity structures. The holistic approach incorporates political parties as a dimension of institutional approaches and makes space for individual and group related factors such as gender identity and ethnic backgrounds of minority representatives. The content analysis combines qualitative and quantitative techniques to provide an in-depth understanding of the subject area on the one hand, and formulate generalizable patterns on the other. Comparing the British and the Dutch cases reveals to what extent, if any, the opportunity structures differ across Britain and the Netherlands; the latter showing a clear shift towards a more integrative approach, whereas Britain would still seem to be attached to multiculturalism even debating it loudly in recent years. Findings of the qualitative content analysis reveal suppressive framings as well as messages supporting cultural and religious rights. The quantitative content analysis challenges the profound role attributed to the citizenship regime and media discourse. Political party membership appears to be the most significant factor in explaining a variance in framing cultural and religious rights and freedoms in the parliament. The roles of ethnic background and gender identity are also significant. However, their impacts differ across the two cases.Item Open Access Minority representatives' in the Netherlands: supporting, silencing or suppressing?(Oxford University Press, 2016) Aydemir, N.; Vliegenthart, R.This article focuses on how often and in what ways 'minority representatives' address cultural and/or religious rights and freedoms by analysing parliamentary questions between 2002 and 2012. The research first analysed to what extent, if any, Member of Parliaments of minority origin highlight minority-related issues in their parliamentary questions. Thereafter, it analysed the content of those questions in more detail. Unlike much previous research, we did not take a favourable content for granted. The idea of 'suppressive representation' was introduced to describe those cases in which 'minority representatives' were restrictive towards cultural and/or religious freedoms of 'immigrant minorities'. Representation patterns show differences across group-and individual-level identities. © 2015 The Author 2015. Since misconceptions are a significant problem at all levels of education, studies have been increasing in the field of biology education. The aim of the study was to explore the patterns of the articles about biology misconceptions in Turkey and to reveal general tendencies. To meet this aim, 67 articles were selected through ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus, EBSCOhost, ULAKBİM and ASOS Index databases published from 2000 to 2014. Meta-synthesis (thematic content analysis) method was used to explore characteristics, purposes, themes and patterns, data collection tool types, research methods, sample and sample sizes, and data analysis methods of these articles. Selected articles were subjected to the adapted version of the Paper Classification Form developed by Sözbilir, Kutu & Yaşar (2012). The results show that articles about misconception in biology are mostly published in international journals and written in Turkish. These articles mainly focus on identifying misconceptions. Most of the studies’ samples were pre-service teachers. The sample iv size of the studies varied between 31-100. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were equally dominate over mixed method, which was less preferred. The findings also indicate that more studies have been undertaken in environment and ecology, and genetics and cell division. Achievement and diagnostic tests were the most common data collection tools and used multiple choice and open-ended question types. This review is expected to inform educators, teachers, pre-service teachers and curriculum developers about themes and patterns in misconception research.Item Open Access Misconceptions in biology: a meta-synthesis study of research, 2000-2014(Routledge, 2019) Kumandaş, B.; Ateşkan, Armağan; Lane, J.Teachers need to be aware of biology misconceptions in their classrooms and how to address them. In response, researchers and science educators have suggested and examined effective practices to prevent and ameliorate misconceptions. An extensive review of the literature gives researchers and educators insights into trends, practices, and gaps in the misconceptions research and helps decide which issues to address and why. The current study shares how researchers in Turkey conduct a content analysis of published misconception research in Turkey by using a form. The analysis resulted in a meta-synthesis (thematic content analysis) that inventoried and compared the purposes, research methods, data collection instruments, and findings of the selected publications. Biology educators in other regions of the world can inform their practice by using this instrument and research methods to learn about trends and patterns in misconception research. Researchers will gain insights into effective methods that have been used to examine misconceptions and will be able to identify biology misconceptions that have been under-investigated and need further analysis.Item Open Access New labour's ethical dimension: Statistical trends in Tony Blair's foreign policy speeches(2010) Mumford, D.; Selck, T.J.Debate has raged over the extent to which New Labour has succeeded in incorporating an ethical dimension in British foreign policy. The assumption has been that New Labour at least changed the context of foreign policy by adopting a more moralistic language. However, there has been no attempt as yet to show this statistically. Using computer-assisted content analysis of Margaret Thatcher's, Robin Cook's and Tony Blair's foreign policy speeches, and assuming that Blair, as opposed to Cook, is the representative voice of New Labour, this research finds that New Labour has indeed changed the context significantly. However, this change did not occur until after the events of 9/11. © 2010 The Authors. Drawing the attention of leading universities around the world, MOOCs are new distance education (DE) phenomena. It is expected that the number of students applying for higher education will be increasing 62.7% by the year 2025, however, the number of institutions is not accelerating at a fast enough pace to meet the demand. Due to their constantly expanding young population, developing countries like Turkey consider DE as a potential solution to this growing demand. Some educationists and governments have confirmed that education could become more flexible if a technological infrastructure were applied to life-long learning programs and short term certificate programs. This thesis utilizes the content analysis research method and a thematic network analytic tool to identify the salient components of MOOCs as revealed in scholarly publications for the benefit of university stakeholders. According to the research questions, all the themes related to MOOCs were explored and were examined with a wide perspective. Only peer reviewed journal articles were selected through stratified sampling and coded to collect qualitative data in Nvivo 10. Well-known procedures were followed to provide rigor in this research. Truth-value, applicability, consistency and neutrality were the four major measures utilized for the validity and reliability of this thesis. The findings of the thesis were summarized in terms of eight global themes, 22 organizing themes, and 71 basic themes. These themes constitute a unique framework for the literature and for the stakeholders of MOOCs. The themes and their descriptions can guide individuals and institutions (like universities and organizations) thinking about participating in and/or developing a MOOC course. Individuals or institutional leaders can be made aware of all the aspects of MOOCs as discussed in scholarly publications to gain a holistic view prior to embarking on their own decision process. Thus, some of the pitfalls of early MOOCs can be avoided.Item Embargo Supporting critical thinking skills needed for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme: A content analysis of a national and two international education programs in Turkey(Elsevier Ltd, 2022-11-29) Dulun, Ö.; Lane, Jannie FarberStudents need well developed critical thinking skills for future employment and to deal with real life problems. These skills involve reviewing, comprehending and analyzing sources of data to make informed decisions and to reflect on possible outcomes and consequences of these decisions. Fortunately, many education programs provide learners with activities and experiences to foster and develop their critical thinking skills. One well-known program is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program for upper high school students. Given the challenges of this program, it is important to ensure that students are prepared before they enroll. Therefore, this study examined educational programs offered to Turkish students in grades 9 and 10 to learn about the objectives and learning experiences they receive to develop their critical thinking. A content analysis of three education programs was conducted, guided by a framework identifying dimensions of critical thinking. The three programs were the national program, the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and Cambridge's International General Certificate of Secondary Education. For each program, four different subject areas were analyzed. The subject areas that addressed all the critical thinking components most thoroughly were the language courses (Turkish and English). The study also found that Approaches to Learning skills outlined by the International Baccalaureate provide strong guidance to ensuring critical thinking are integrated throughout the curriculum.Item Open Access Sustainable development goals in the IB primary years programme(Bilkent University, 2022-09) Lund, NamrataPlanet Earth’s natural resources are fast depleting. The pressure of about seven billion people is taking its toll on all ecosystems. Today we have a depleted ozone layer, acid rain, oil spills, nuclear accidents, and health problems that have had an impact on health and education. Education is one of the important and sure ways to help change people’s values and behaviors thus encouraging sustainable lifestyles. This study explored the written International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) documents and saw if these documents help envelope the United Nations (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The results show that 17 SDGs are represented in the two IB PYP documents analyzed. However, an imbalance was observed and there was more weightage towards some of the SDGs and their targets and very little or none towards some SDGs and their targets. Further research is recommended in the taught International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP).Item Open Access A systematic literature review of game studies research in the last decade: Where are we now and where do we go from here?(Nova Science Publishers, 2021-05-17) Dikmen, E. S.; İnce, Levent Y.; Akşak, Emel Özdora; Başar, E. The fortune global 500’s framing of corporate responses to COVID-19 pandemic(MDPI, 2022-03-01) Uysal, Nur; Akşak, Emel ÖzdoraThis study examined corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication and pandemic responses of large corporations across multiple industries in a global context. Specifically, this research (1) described the state of CSR communication during the pandemic, and (2) identified how top global Fortune 500 corporations framed their COVID-19 pandemic responses as part of their social advocacy. An in-depth content analysis of the corporate communication messages revealed that top global corporations positioned their pandemic responses as an extension of their ongoing CSR commitment, prioritizing their philanthropic responsibilities over the ethical, legal, and economic responsibilities. They often relied on war metaphors, portraying the virus as the “common enemy” and employees as “heroes,” and highlighted their leadership role in the global “fight” against the pandemic as a “partner” of governments, “protector” of employees, and “supporter” of the communities. Analyzing a large data set from a global perspective, this study provides a comprehensive look at the state of CSR communication during the pandemic and demonstrates how corporations as authoritative societal actors help shape the ongoing discourse on the global COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the study makes several practical and theoretical contributions to sustainability research and our understanding of the evolving relationship between business and society. © 2022 by the authors.
