Item Open Access Aesthetic experience in performance art : Marina Abramović the artist is present(Bilkent University, 2013) Kırmızı, DefneThis thesis explores the possibility of an embodied, corporeal and transforming aesthetic experience that performance art may reveal. The artistic practice of Marina Abramović, who witnessed and pioneered the paradigm shifts in the performance art sphere, will be examined in conjunction with the performative turn and affective turn that art has been going through. In addition to a comprehensive overview of the former academic studies done on Abramović’s body of work, her latest performance The Artist Is Present (2010) and the critical reception it received will be discussed within the framework of aesthetic experience as a path to affective encounter in the area of contemporary performance art. John Dewey’s idea of art as a form of experience that creates an active engagement with oneself, and the others, in addition to the contemporary affect theory that is rooted in Gilles Deleuze’s concept of affect will lead us to see how affects grow in the area of performance art, and how aesthetic experience is constituted in and reinforces this affective engagement.Item Open Access Essays in corporate finance : an analysis of stock market investment patterns in emerging countries from a behavioral and a traditional perspective(Bilkent University, 2017-06) Usul, NaimeThis thesis investigates the investment patterns in emerging stock markets first from a behavioral then from a traditional perspective. The first two chapters deal with affective motivations in the stock investment decision. First, we develop the hypothesis concerning the affect-based investment motivations in the stock markets and the role of affective self-affinity. Based on Social Identity Theory, Affect literature, Socially Responsible Investing literature and Home Bias literature, we propose that identification with different dimensions of a company may trigger affect-based extra investment motivation. The following chapter tests the hypotheses developed in the first chapter using partial least squares path analysis with Turkish stock investors. We conclude that the ideas of socially responsible investing and nationalism have significant positive effects on the investment motivation. Likewise, the people and the groups that the investors identify themselves with have significant positive effects on the affect-based motivations to invest in the companies, which are perceived to support those people and groups. The last chapter, studies the return patterns in MENA stock markets during the Arab Spring events in an event study setting. Considering the three-year period of 2010- 2013, we study the effects of 172 events on the stock markets of nine countries in the region, namely; Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Tunisia. Using Brown and Warner (1985) event study methodology, we have found some events have relatively large effects, though we cannot find significant reactions on the average. Thus, his discussions on art and cinema are studied thoroughly. The revelation of affects, percepts and sensations in art constitutes the important amount of this thesis. In reference to that the revelation of movementimage and time-image in cinema explored, in order to understand the identity of the image in different art forms. Finally in the light of these explorations on image, experimental video art is discussed in individual works, in the hope of discovering borders between theory and practice aside the discovery of the possibilities this new image can offer to thought. These discussions on cinema and experimental video art enlighten not only concepts of cinema and video, but also alter their relation with other practices and theories.Item Open Access From hate to love: how learning can change affective responses to touched materials(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2020) Cavdan, M.; Freund, A.; Trieschmann, A.-K.; Doerschner, Katja; Drewing, K.; Nisky, I.; Hartcher-O’Brien, J.; Wiertlewski, M.; Smeets, J.People display systematic affective reactions to specific properties of touched materials. For example, granular materials such as fine sand feel pleasant, while rough materials feel unpleasant. We wondered how far such relationships between sensory material properties and affective responses can be changed by learning. Manipulations in the present experiment aimed at unlearning the previously observed negative relationship between roughness and valence and the positive one between granularity and valence. In the learning phase, participants haptically explored materials that are either very rough or very fine-grained while they simultaneously watched positive or negative stimuli, respectively, from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). A control group did not interact with granular or rough materials during the learning phase. In the experimental phase, participants rated a representative diverse set of 28 materials according to twelve affective adjectives. We found a significantly weaker relationship between granularity and valence in the experimental group compared to the control group, whereas roughness-valence correlations did not differ between groups. That is, the valence of granular materials was unlearned (i.e., to modify the existing valence of granular materials) but not that of rough materials. These points to differences in the strength of perceptuo-affective relations, which we discuss in terms of hard-wired versus learned connections.Item Open Access Gilles Deleuze's philosophy of art : the cruelty of affect(Bilkent University, 1999) Eken, BulentIn this work the influential contemporary French philosopher Gilles Deleuze' s aesthetic theory has been analysed with regard to its philosophical origins. Baruch Spinoza, whose influence is felt in the whole of Deleuze' s ouevre, proves to be the basic figure of his approach to art as well. Gilles Deleuze sets out to formulate a vitalist theory of art, the scope of which requires that the categories of judgement and reception be displaced. This scope situates artistic activity in a generalised creativity, where reception and judgement find their places as points of break and tension which could still be examined within the system of creation.Item Open Access High school students’ knowledge level of, attitudes toward and interest in cancer(Bilkent University, 2017-05) Yıldırım, IlgınCancer is one of the most common diseases in recent years. However, there are very few studies which investigate adolescents’ cancer awareness and thoughts about cancer in Turkey. This research explored high school students’ (N= 275, %56 female and %44 male students) level of knowledge about risk factors, attitudes toward and interest in cancer. The required data were collected from three private schools in Ankara and one private school in Erzurum via questionnaire. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS, v.24.0) was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that most of the students were successful at identifying cancer risk factors except for “overweight” and all non-carcinogenic factors. In addition, most of the participants had negative attitudes toward cancer, whereas they did not tend to exhibit cancer protective behaviors. Furthermore, most of the participants were not interested in “cancer topic.” In addition, female students had more negative thoughts and tended to exhibit more protective behavior toward cancer than male students. However, no gender difference was found in terms of the students’ level of knowledge about risk factors and interest in cancer. In the direction of these results, the current study suggests that exploring high school students’ existing level of knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and interests about cancer contribute to teachers, curriculum and lesson material developers to form an effective cancer education.Item Open Access Perceived structure and achievement goals as predictors of student' self-regulated learning and affect and the mediating role of competence need satisfaction(Elsevier, 2013-02) Mouratidis, A.; Vansteenkiste, M.; Michou, A.; Lens, W.We investigated the extent to which perceived structure and personal achievement goals could explain students' effective learning strategies and affect-related experiences in a sample of Greek adolescent students (N=606; 45.4% males; mean age: M=15.05, SD=1.43). Having controlled for students' social desirability responses, we used multilevel analyses, and found that between-student (i.e., within class) differences in perceived structure related positively to learning strategies and positive affect and negatively to negative affect, with the relations being partially mediated by competence need satisfaction. In addition, we found between-student differences in the relations of mastery-approach, performance-approach, and performanceavoidance goals to the learning-strategy and affect outcomes. Moreover, at the between-class level, perceived structure related positively to learning strategies and positive affect, and negatively to depressive feelings. Finally, an interesting cross-level interaction between perceived structure and performance-avoidance goals for negative affect revealed that well-structured classrooms attenuated the positive, harmful relation between performance-avoidance goals and negative affect. These findings indicate the key role of structure and the endorsement of mastery-approach goals in the classroom.Item Open Access Racing toward history: Utopia and progress in John Guare’s a free man of color(University of Toronto Press, 2015) Mansbridge, J.This article examines the way John Guare’s A Free Man of Color (2010) mobilizes a metatheatrical aesthetic to question the methods we use to organize our understandings of the past and formulate our projections of the future. Looking specifically at George C. Wolfe’s production at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theatre and drawing on the work of Reinhart Koselleck and Ernst Bloch, the article shows how Guare’s densely textured epic stages a metatheatrical duel between two competing forces of history: one grounded in Enlightenment notions of progress (rational, linear, forward movement), the other in utopia (an imagined future always on the horizon). As progress and utopia jostle for the authority to define the history – and so also the future – that the play re-enacts, it becomes clear to the audience that what is at stake, in our present, is the meanings and practices of citizenship, race, sexuality, and class that history defines.Item Open Access The role of sense of coherence and physical activity in positive and negative affect of Turkish adolescents(Libra Publishers, Inc., 2009) Öztekin, C.; Tezer, E.This study investigated the role of sense of coherence and total physical activity in positive and negative affect. Participants were 376 (169 female, 206 male, and 1 missing value) student volunteers from different facilities of Middle East Technical University. Three questionnaires: Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC), Physical Activity Assessment Questionnaire (PAAQ), and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) were administered to the students together with the demographic information sheet. Two separate stepwise multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the predictive power of sense of coherence and total physical activity on positive and negative affect scores. Results revealed that both sense of coherence and total physical activity predicted the positive affect whereas only the sense of coherence predicted the negative affect on university students. Findings are discussed in light of sense of coherence, physical activity, and positive and negative affect literature.
