It is shown how the 2-D fractional Fourier transform can be obtained optically and its various physical and mathematical properties are discussed. Relationship between this transform and chirp and wavelet transforms is discussed. Signal convolution, filtering and multiplexing in fractional domains are studied. Application to optical information processing is indicated.
