It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.Includes bibliographical references (pages 17-19).Demiryolu Meslek Okulu'nun kurulması, Türkiye'de ulusal bir demiryolculuk anlayışı ve işletmesi yaratma amaçlı yapılan yeniliklerin en önemlilerinden bir tanesidir. Osmanlı ve Anadolu'da demiryollarının gelişimi yabancı devletlerin izin verdiği ölçüde, yabancı şirketler tarafından imtiyazlarla yapılmıştı. I. Dünya Savaşı'na kadar ise Türkler ve Türkçe demiryollarının işletilmesinin dışında tutulmuştu. I. Dünya Savaşı'ndan itibaren demiryolları millileştirilmeye ve Türkleştirilmeye başlanmıştı. Bu süreç içerisinde demiryollarını işletecek nitelikli eleman ihtiyacını karşılamak için İzmir başta olmak üzere bazı illerle şimendifer mektepleri kurulmuştu. Cumhuriyet döneminde ise zamanla demiryolları devletleştirilmiş ve birçok yeni hattın inşasına başlanmıştı. Tüm bu hatların düzgün işletilebilmesi için 1927 yılında TCDD kurulmuştu. Artarak devam eden kalifiye eleman açığının giderilmesi için 1942'de TCDD Meslek Okul açıldı. Bu okul zaman içerisinde birkaç kez kapatıldı, yeniden açıldı ve Eskişehir'e taşındı. Son kez 1998 ylında kapatılan okul toplam 4735 mezun verdi. Her ne kadar okul yirmi seneden daha uzun süredir kapalı olsa da mezunları hala okulun mezunlar derneği olan DEMOK sayesinde sıkı bir iletişim ve dayanışma içerisindedir. Ayrıca birçok mezun hala TCDD'de farklı görev ve kademelerde çalışmaktadır. Günümüzde yaşanan tren kazaları sebebiyle yeniden açılması hala gündemdedir.The opening of 'Demiryolu Meslek Okulu' is one of the most important feats of the process of creating and operating national railroads. The building and evolution of railroads in Anatolia and The Ottoman Empire was done by foreign companies, under the supervision of foreign states. Turks and Turkish language have been kept out of railroad operations until World War I. The process of nationalization and Turkification of railroads started during World War I. Several railroad schools were established in İzmir and several other cities to satisfy the need of quality personnel at the railroads. The process of nationalization of railroads continued and the construction for many new railroads began after the founding of the Republic of Turkey. Turkish State Railways (TCDD) was established in 1927 to efficiently operate all the railroads in the country. 'Demiryolu Meslek Okulu' was opened to satisfy the growing need of quality personnel in railroads operations. In time, the school closed down and reopened several times and it moved cities to Eskişehir. The school finally closed down in 1998, after 4735 students graduated since it first opened. Although the school has been closed for more than twenty years, graduates are still in touch through the Graduates Society of the school, DEMOK. Moreover, many graduates still work in different positions in the Turkish State Railways.
