It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.Includes bibliographical references (pages 27-29).Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun son yüzyılında batılılaşma hareketleri ile önem kazanan terzilik mesleği, Cumhuriyet’in ilanıyla birlikte yaşanan ve 21. yüzyıla kadar ulaşan sosyoekonomik değişimleri yakından takip etmiştir. Bu araştırma yazısı 19. yüzyılın sonlarından 21. yüzyıla kadar Türkiye sınırları içindeki “ısmarlama terzilik” ve daha geniş kapsamda modayı, odak noktasına ilk ısmarlama Türk gömlekçisi Celalettin Benli’yi alarak incelemiştir. Kronolojik olarak önce Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun son zamanlarındaki batılılaşma etkisiyle oluşan moda anlayışı ve terzilik usulleri incelenmiştir. Bunu takiben Cumhuriyet’in kuruluş yıllarında Şapka ve Kıyafet İnkılabının ve toplumsal alandaki modernleşmenin etkileri altında Türk modası incelenmiştir. 1950-1970 yılları arasında Celalettin Benli’nin ısmarlama terzilik mesleğine girişiyle bağlantılı olarak azınlık terzilerin göçü ve Türkiye ekonomisinin küresel pazarlarla bağlantı kurmasıyla birlikte Türk terzilerinin yaygınlaşması incelenmiştir. Son bölümde ise 20. yüzyılın son dönemi ile 21. yüzyılın ilk dönemleri içinde hız kazanan ve makinize olan moda sektöründeki kapitalist anlayışın etkisi, globalleşmenin ve fabrikalaşmanın bu gelişime sağladığı katkılar, ısmarlama terziliğin şu anki durumu ve gelecekteki olası değişimler ele alınmıştır.This research paper has examined “ısmarlama terzilik” / bespoke tailoring and fashion in Turkey from the late 19th to early 21st century centering the analysis on the first Turkish bespoke tailor, Celalettin Benli. Chronologically, the paper initially examines fashion trends and tailoring traditions among the populace, both which were under the effect of westernization since the last century of the Ottoman Empire. Furthermore, fashion trends in the Turkish Republic’s founding years were examined which were characterized by modernization and the Hats and Clothing Revolution. The time period after the early years of the Republic (1950-1970) was examined with a special focus on Celalettin Benli commencing tailoring. After tailors in Turkey of non-Turkish descent migrated and were replaced by Turkish tailors, the evolution of Turkish fashion continued with bespoke tailoring as the driving force. The paper concludes by focusing on the changes in the fashion industry from the late 20th to early 21st century by industrialization and globalization under a capitalist economy model.
