It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. Bu araştırmada Zekiye Midyat’ın hayatı, özellikle ilk kadın ilçe belediye başkanı olma süreci incelenmiştir. Zekiye Midyat’ın o dönemde belediye başkanlığı yapmasının Türk siyaset dünyasında yer almak isteyen diğer kadınlara etkileri ve yaptığı faaliyetlerle Midyat ilçesine katkıları araştırılmıştır. Araştırma için Zekiye Midyat’ın yaşamına tanıklık etmiş akrabaları ile röportajlar gerçekleştirilmiş; bunun yanı sıra 1950’li yıllarda Zekiye Midyat’ı konu alan gazete haberlerinden, Zekiye Midyat’ın yaşamından esinlenilerek çekilen Hükümet Kadın filminden, dönemin Türkiye’sinin ataerkil toplum yapısına ve siyasi dünyasına dair bilgiler içeren makalelerden yararlanılmıştır. Kaynakların da yardımıyla Zekiye Midyat’ın Midyat ilçesine sağladığı yararların ve Türk siyasetindeki kadınlar için öneminin daha iyi anlaşılması amaçlanmaktadır.Zekiye Midyat served as Turkey's first female county mayor for Mardin's Midyat county between 1956-1960. In this research, the life of Zekiye Midyat, especially her process of becoming the first woman mayor of the district was researched. The impact of Zekiye Midyat being the first female county mayor in that time period for other women who want to take part in Turkish politics and her contributions to the Midyat county with the services she did were investigated. For this research, interviews were conducted with the relatives of Zekiye Midyat who had witnessed her life. Additionally, newspaper articles in the 1950s about Zekiye Midyat, the movie Hükümet Kadın inspired by her life, articles containing information about the patriarchal social structure and political world of Turkey in that time period were used.
