It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Students from all departments prepare and present final projects for examination by a committee, with 10 projects chosen to receive awards.Includes bibliographical references (pages 15-16).Atatürk had a deep interest in archaeology, stemming from his belief in how it might affect nationalism and secularism. Archaeology was then used to create a Turkish identity that could combat the notion that Turks were a secondary race. Atatürk took the initiative to enhance Turkey’s archaeological field through the establishment of the Turkish Historical Society and by carrying out excavations. Atatürk’s approach and attitude towards archaeology differed significantly from that of the Ottoman’s. Furthermore, the archaeology’s effects were not limited to Turkey but had an impact on other countries as well.Atatürk’ün arkeolojiye olan derin ilgisi arkeolojinin milliyetçilik ve laikliği ne şekilde etkileyebileceği hususundaki inancından kaynaklanıyordu. Arkeoloji o zamanlar Türklerin ikinci sınıf bir ırk olduğu düşüncesiyle savaşabilecek bir Türk kimliği yaratmak için kullanılmıştı. Atatürk, Türk Tarih Kurumunun kurulması ve kazı çalışmalarının yapılması yoluyla Türkiye’nin arkeoloji alanında ilerleyebilmesi için inisiyatif aldı. Atatürk’ün arkeolojiye karşı tutum ve yaklaşımı Osmanlılarınkinden önemli derecede farklılık gösteriyordu.
