Pakkan, M.Akman, V.2016-02-082016-02-0819940269-2821http://hdl.handle.net/11693/25955The success of set theory as a foundation for mathematics inspires its use in artificial intelligence, particularly in commonsense reasoning. In this survey, we briefly review classical set theory from an AI perspective, and then consider alternative set theories. Desirable properties of a possible commonsense set theory are investigated, treating different aspects like cumulative hierarchy, self-reference, cardinality, etc. Assorted examples from the ground-breaking research on the subject are also given. © 1995 Kluwer Academic Publishers.EnglishCommonsense reasoningCumulative hierarchyHypersetsKnowledge representationSelf-referenceSet theoryArtificial intelligenceFormal logicHierarchical systemsKnowledge representationMathematical techniquesCardinalityCommonsense reasoningCommonsense set theoryCumulative hierarchyHypersetsSelf referenceSet theoryIssues in commonsense set theoryArticle10.1007/BF008490611573-7462
