It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Memleketi Niğde’den İstanbul'a göç eden bir Rum olan Pandeli Çobanoğlu’nun lokantacılık hikayesi 1901’de seyyar satıcılıkla başlamıştır. 1. Dünya Savaşı’nın etkisiyle Niğde’ye geri dönen Pandeli, bir süre memleketinde kaldıktan sonra 1926 senesinde İstanbul'a geri dönüp Yağcılar İskelesi’nde ilk lokantasını açmıştır. Burada büyük başarı elde edip çeşitli önemli ismi ağırlayan Pandeli’nin yükselişi 1955’te Rumlara ve azınlıklara karşı yaşanan tutumla bilinen 6-7 Eylül Olaylarında sekteye uğramıştır ve dükkanı yağmalanıp zarar görmüştür. Bu uğursuz olay ardından lokantacılığa küsen Pandeli zamanında ziyaretçisi olan çeşitli devlet büyüklerinin desteğiyle günümüzdeki Mısır Çarşısı’ndaki yerinde tekrardan kapılarını açmış ve mirası ile birlikte lezzetli yemeklerini sunmaya devam etme şansı bulmuştur. Günümüze kadar gelen bu tarihi lokanta, İstanbul kültüründe ve tarihinde önemli bir yer kaplamaktadır.Pandeli restaurant, which is currently located in Mısır Çarşısı in Eminönü, takes up a very important part in the history of İstanbul. The story of Pandeli Çobanoğlu, born in Niğde, begins particularly when he starts working as a peddler in the street in 1901 in İstanbul. He continues to work there for some time, but after World War I starts, he returns back to Niğde. In 1926, after spending some time back home, he heads back to İstanbul to open his first restaurant in Yağcılar Pier. Pandeli gains success in this restaurant named after him. He hosts many important people here, particularly high in ranking. However, this success comes to a halt when 6-7 September 1955 events wreaks havoc on minority communities, especially Greek communities in which Pandeli also was a part of. These events immensely effected him and his restaurant and he retires from the food industry. Yet, some statesmen were particularly upset about losing the delicious food he made. They provided him the current place in Mısır Çarşısı, this allowed Pandeli to continue to carry his legacy to future generations.
