It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Saint-Joseph Lisesi ve Mülkiye’de aldığı eğitimle çocukluk hayali olan diplomatlığa adım atmış, Dışişleri’nde hızla öne çıkmıştır. Bu çalışma, Sönmez Köksal’ın görevleri kadar karşılaştığı zorlukları ve katkılarını da yazılı kaynaklar ve görüşmeler ışığında ele almaktadır. 1986-1990’da Bağdat Büyükelçisi olarak Irak’ın Kuveyt’i işgal edeceğini öngörmüş, bu başarısı 1992’de MİT Müsteşarlığı’na atanmasının yolunu açmıştır. MİT’te açık sınav sistemi, teknolojik yenilikler ve analiz odaklı reformlarla kurumu dönüştürmüştür. Paris Büyükelçiliği sonrası emekli olmuş, bilgi ve deneyimlerini yazıları ve konuşmalarıyla paylaşmıştır. Aile hayatı ve Filiz Akın ile evliliği de bu çalışmada yer almaktadır. Köksal’ın hayatı, Cumhuriyet dönemi Türkiye’sinin güvenlik ve diplomasi vizyonunu yansıtır.This article examines the private life of Sönmez Köksal and the important turning points in his professional life. Starting from Köksal’s youth and education, the works he completed both nationally and internationally are examined. The first section focuses on Sönmez Köksal’s youth and his first duties in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the second section examines 2 his senior duties in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Finally, the third section discusses his term as Undersecretary in the National Intelligence Agency between 1992-1998 and his retirement.
