It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Şu an ise İstanbul’un kapasitesi en yüksek sinagogudur. Sinagog, hem tarihi hem de sosyal açıdan İstanbul’da merkezi bir konumda bulunmasından mütevellit Türkiye Yahudileri cemaatinin gözünde önemli bir konuma sahiptir. Osmanlı İmparatorluğu dönemine kadar giden Türk-Yahudi bağları 2. Beyazıt ve Kanuni Sultan Süleyman’ın hükümdarlıkları altında serpilmiş ve güçlenmiştir. Bu dönemlerde İstanbul’a göç eden Yahudiler ise yüzyıllardır, bir azınlık olmalarına rağmen, şehrin ayrılmaz bir parçası olmuş ve Neve Şalom Sinagogu gibi onlarca eseri Türkiye kültür hazinesine kazandırmışlardır. Bu araştırmada bir kültürel miras olarak Neve Şalom’un ve Türkiye Yahudilerinin tarihçesi, sinagogun mimarisi, dini ve sosyal açıdan kullanım amaçları ve son olarak da hem Türkiye hem de Yahudilerin tarihinde kara bir leke olarak yerini almış 1986 ve 2003 yıllarında yaşanan ve onlarca Yahudi ve Müslüman vatandaşın hayatını kaybetmesine sebebiyet veren esef verici terör saldırıları incelenmiştir. Çalışma sırasında Türk Yahudileri tarihine ilişkin yazılmış kitaplardan, makalelerden, dönemin gazetelerinden ve kendileri de Türkiye Yahudilerinden olan Yusuf Besalel ve 500. Yıl Türk Musevileri Müzesi Müdürü Nisya İsman Allovi ile yapılan röportajlardan yararlanılmıştır.Neve Şalom Synagogue located in Karaköy district of İstabul and built on March 25, 1951 is a product of efforts exerted by Türkiye Jewish Society. The synagogue has been the biggest in capacity in İstanbul and it was the largest Jewish structure in Türkiye for a long time until the Edirne Synagogue reopens its doors in 2015. Given its significant and pivotal location in İstanbul, the synagogue occupies a crucial place in the hearts of Jews in terms of both historical and social importance. The well-vested strings between Turks and Jews dates back to Imperial times. Especially under the reign of Bezayıd II and Süleyman the Magnificent, Jews were backed against the atrocities of the Inquisition. In the wake of these initial steps, relations thrived and strengthened. Jewish immigrants, who drained out of Europe, found their place in İstanbul under Ottoman rule and despite being a minority, they have become one of the inextricable and integral parts of the city by adding up tens of new cultural heritages. This particular research looks into the Neve Şalom Synagogue as a cultural heritage and scrutinizes its history, architecture, its use as a social and religious site and finally the terrorist attacks happened in 1986 and 2003 that killed tens of Muslim and Jewish citizens. During the research, books, articles, news dating back to attacks to the synagogue and two oral sources were utilized.
