It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Bu olayları takiben gerçekleşen 12 Eylül 1980 Darbesi ise ülkedeki islamcı gruplar dahil olmak üzere çoğu siyasi hareketi baskı altında bıraktı. Bu sebeplerle Hasan Güneşer, Mekki Yassıkaya, Ömer Yorulmaz ve Yılmaz Yalçıner, 14 Ekim 1980 tarihinde İstanbul-Ankara uçağını İran’a gitmek üzere ile kaçırdılar. Korsanlar birbirlerini çoğunun beraber çalıştığı ve İslamcı kimlikleri ile bilinen Bizim Anadolu, Vesika, Sebil, Şura ve Tevhid gazetelerinden tanıyorlardı. Bu araştırmada dünyadaki uçak kaçırma olayları hakkında genel bilgiler, bu dört kişiyi uçak kaçırmaya iten olaylar, olay anında ve sonrasında gerçekleşenler; olayı anlatan gazeteler ve Mekki Yassıkaya ile yapılan röportaj kullanılarak anlatılmıştır. Bu olay, 1970-80 yılları arasında İslam dünyasında gerçekleşen olayların ve 1980 Darbesinin Türkiye'de oluşturduğu atmosferi anlamak için önemlidir.The instability in the Islamic world caused by the Iranian Revolution and the Invasion of Afghanistan also affected Turkey in the process. Following these events, the 1980 coup put many political movements, including the Islamic groups, under pressure. Under these circumstances, Hasan Güneşer, Mekki Yassıkaya, Ömer Yorulmaz and Yılmaz Yalçıner hijacked the İstanbul Ankara flight to fly to Iran in October 14, 1980. They knew each other from the Islamic newspapers they worked on, Bizim Anadolu, Vesika, Sebil, Şura and Tevhid. Newspaper reports about the event and an interview conducted with Mekki Yassıkaya were used in order to explain what happened during and after the hijacking, what caused them to take such action and general information about flight hijackings at the time.
