It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. The effects of the 1970s oil crisis on the world and its outcomes in Turkey are explained. How the oil crisis drew attention to renewable energy sources and how it might have influenced the establishment of the Solar Energy Institute are observed. The development stage of the institute and the factors defining its path are analyzed. The interactions of the government of Turkey with the institute as well as Turkey’s national renewable energy policy in the decades following the inception of the institute are dissected.
