It is designed to encourage students to work in groups on projects concerning any topic of their choice that relates to the history of Turkey. It is designed as an interactive course with an emphasis on research and the objective of investigating events, chronologically short historical periods, as well as historic representations. Vecdi Gönül, darbe öncesi dönemde başta Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü olmak üzere birtakım önemli mevkilerde bulunmuş olsa da, özellikle darbe sonrası dönemde bahsi geçen her iki parti için de kilit bir rol oynamış ve Türk siyasetini derinden etkilemiştir. Ankara ve İzmir Valiliği, İçişleri Bakanlığı Müsteşarlığı, Sayıştay Başkanlığı, Milli Savunma Bakanlığı yapmış olan Gönül'ün, aynı zamanda Başbakanlık Müsteşarlığı, İçişleri Bakanlığı, Dışişleri Bakanlığı ve Cumhurbaşkanlığı yapması da söz konusu olmuştur. Bürokrat kişiliğiyle bilinen Gönül, tüm bu önemli rollerine rağmen gerek siyasi analizlerde gerek de halkın gözünde geri planda kalmıştır. Dolayısıyla bu araştırma, Türk yakın tarihini anlamak için büyük değer taşıyan Vecdi Gönül’ün bu dönemdeki rollerini açıklamaktadır.The period that started with the Turkish military coup of September 12, 1980 and which extends to the present, has been a critical period in which Turkey's institutions and dynamics were reinvented. In this context, especially ANAP and AKP became the two political parties that left their mark on this period. Although Vecdi Gönül held some important positions, most notably as the General Director of Security, in the pre-coup period; he played a key role in both parties and deeply affected Turkish politics, especially in the post-coup period. Gönül, who served as the Governor of Ankara and İzmir provinces, Advisor of the Ministry of the Interior, the President of the Turkish Court of Accounts and the Minister of National Defense, was also rumored to become the next Advisor of the Prime Ministry, the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Turkish President in various occasions. Known primarily as a bureaucrat, Gönül, despite all these important roles, remained in the background both in mainstream political analysis and in public opinion.
