Item Open Access Exploring the visitors’ perceptions and experiences of museums(Springer, Cham, 2018) Gürel, Eda; Nielsen, Axel; Kozak, M.; Kozak, N.In order to increase visitor numbers and survive in the long run, today’s museums need to understand their visiting publics including cultural tourists. Therefore, this chapter aims to understand various publics, their perceptions and experiences of museums by conducting a qualitative research. The study sample was selected from among the visitors of two main museums in Genoa, Italy. Face-to face interviews were conducted to gather data on the definition of a museum by the visitors. The analyses of 372 usable responses revealed seven core elements of museum visitor experiences which included experiences that provide historical and/ or cultural reminisce and awareness, learning and self-development, exposure to tangible evidences, sensory stimulation, wonder and discovery, entertainment and socializing. There is little research, however, on the ways in which disability arts are associated with professionalism. This study examines professionalization in disability arts by comparing it with the concept of professionalization in the arts generally. It identifies three components of professionalization in disability arts by means of a case study of an inclusive arts organization. This qualitative study entails 17 semi-structured interviews with artists, staff members, and other stakeholders both with and without disabilities. The results identify both commonalities and differences in the components of professionalization between artists with and without disability and indicate challenges to be met in improving public perceptions toward the professionalization of artists with disability.Item Open Access Opportunities and obligations in dealing with the disabled staff and customers in hospitality industry(Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2007) Collins, Ayşe Baş; Chang, P. R.Travel and Tourism is a high-growth industry, which is forecast to increase its total economic activity by 4.2% per annum worldwide in real terms over the next ten years (World Travel and Tourism Council, 2006). Travel and Tourism, when taking into account transportation, accommodations, food services, recreational facilities and the related services forms one of the world's most important and wide spread employers. Almost 9% of world employment is comprised of Travel and Tourism and is growing at a current rate of 1 in 11.5 new jobs. There are governmental policies, legal aspects, laws, procedures and moral obligations that relate to the treatment of the disabled staff and disabled customers. Moreover, there are even broader opportunities that can be derived from an understanding of this subject since disability is one of the factors that may cause social exclusion and poverty. In 21st century, people with disabilities are still underestimated as employees, consumers and active participants in society. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a basic introduction to the Equal Employment Opportunities requirements for the Disabled and the Human Rights of Disabled Guests in the Hospitality Industry. © 2008 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
