Item Open Access Adaptation and nostalgia(Oxford University Press, 2020) Kennedy-Karpat, ColleenThis essay highlights the shared critical terrain of adaptation and nostalgia: how they critically juxtapose the past with the present, and how they underscore the impossibility of return while also relying on prior experience. It also explores nostalgia’s effect on personal responses to adaptations and its interaction with textual form. Drawing from various areas of literary, media, and performance studies, including film adaptations of children’s literature, Watchmen and its screen adaptations, and Disney’s live-action remakes, this essay underscores how both nostalgia and adaptation are inherently multivalent concepts, and how they each rely on perspective to generate critical meaning.Item Open Access Adaptation and systems of cultural value(Palgrave Macmillan, Cham, 2017) Kennedy-Karpat, Colleen; Sandberg, E.; Kennedy-Karpat, Colleen; Sandberg, E.Item Open Access An analysis of Turkey's telecommunications sector's social responsibility practices online(Elsevier Ltd, 2015) Ozdora-Aksak, E.Rooted in social identity theory, this exploratory study focuses on Turkey's four largest telecommunications companies (Turkcell, Türk Telekom, Avea, and Vodafone) to determine how public relations and corporate social responsibility practices help construct organizational identity. To achieve its aim, the study performs a thematic content analysis of the companies' corporate websites and social media accounts. Study results reveal that, in addition to focusing on their core business functions, telecommunications companies in Turkey try to create value and construct a legitimate identity by emphasizing community benefits and their superiority vis-à-vis their competitors. This study also demonstrates that companies' CSR activities play a crucial role in constructing organizational identity and gaining legitimacy. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.Item Open Access Becoming-animal in the narrative and the form of Reha Erdem’s Kosmos(CINEJ Cinema Journal, 2020) Keskin, Suphi; Baykan, BurcuThis article performs a narrative and aesthetic analysis of Reha Erdem’s movie, Kosmos (2009), through an engagement with Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s philosophical concept of becoming-animal. Erdem narrativizes the story of an odd traveller dervish named Kosmos, who has supernatural abilities and an expanded capability of communication—one that displays liminal features between human and animal. Through his distinctive editing technique, particularly by juxtaposing human and animal faces, the director further deconstructs the conceptual boundaries between humanity and animality, revealing the inherent connectedness of the two. Hence, this article discloses the consistency between the narrative and the form of Kosmos through a close reading based upon the notion of becoming-animal and its conceptual constituents. Item Open Access Benevolence(Routledge, 2001) Mutman, Mahmut; Taylor, V. E.; Winquist, C. E.Item Open Access Bill Murray and Wes Anderson, or the curmudgeon as muse(Palgrave Macmillan, New York, 2014) Kennedy-Karpat, Colleen; Kunze, P. C.As Melena Ryzik joked in a report from a Golden Globes after-party, “Ain’t no party like a Bill Murray party, because a Bill Murray party don’t stop.”1 Although it was meant to encapsulate the antics of a single evening, Ryzik’s observation resonates beyond one star-studded gala into the arc of Murray’s entire career, and director Wes Anderson has certainly enjoyed a Bill Murray party that seems like it won’t soon stop.Item Open Access Cem Yılmaz and genre parody in Turkish national cinema(Taylor and Francis, 2020) Örsler, M. Mert; Kennedy-Karpat, ColleenCem Yılmaz has become nearly synonymous with Turkish comedy through comedies like Arif V 216 (2018). Taking this film as its focus, this article situates Yılmaz among his competitors while tracing his roots in Turkish entertainment by discussing his relationship to mid-twentieth-century Yeşilçam and to the meddah storytelling tradition. ©, Copyright Taylor & Francis.Item Open Access Children's mobile communicative practices and locational privacy(Oxford University Press, 2022-09-01) Özkul, DidemChildren start using smartphones increasingly from early ages. This makes it more difficult for them to develop an understanding of online privacy and managing their personal data. Many parents monitor and regulate children's online media use. However, they also encourage using smartphones to ensure the safety and security of their children. This study explores how children use smartphones in relation to their understanding of privacy of communication, content, data, and location. It examines data from 7 focus groups with arts-based methods conducted with 37 children in UK. The findings suggest that children think of their smartphones as a private communication technology and a private place, and they manage their locational privacy based on the necessity of using a mobile app and through adjusting the location settings on their phones. The findings also suggest that privacy of mobile data and user content are dependent on where mobile communication takes place. © 2022 The Author(s). It aims to show how the efforts of displaced people to construct a belonging to the new place of dwelling are intertwined with the aesthetic and material practices of making homes. Based on ethnographic research, it will be argued that a particular "Turkish home" is collectively created through shared aesthetic practices and discourses and serves as a material and social medium both for imagining and building collectivities and for constructing and expressing ambiguities, conflicts, multiplicities and contests, played out in the aesthetics of the everyday. Challenging the common view that homes in diasporic or migratory resettlements reflect past lives and locations or a mixture of two cultures and two sets of different objects associated with them, it will be argued that Turkish homes in Vienna are made through a new and particular aesthetic, which serves to produce and reproduce a communal Turkish narrative of migration to and dwelling in Vienna. © BERG 2010.Item Open Access A commentary on narrative platforms, cinematic universes, and consumers formerly known as the audience(ISMD, 2018) Treske, Andreas; Özgün, A.Item Open Access Comparing national vs. international coverage of terrorism: A framing analysis of the Reina nightclub terrorist attack(IGI Global, 2022) Alakoc, Burcu Pinar; Ozdora-Aksak, EmelWhile terrorist incidents are physically, psychologically, and financially costly, they also provide targeted governments with a window of opportunity to engage in public diplomacy in the international arena. In the wake of terrorist attacks, leaders of the targeted countries can try to use media outlets to convey intentionally crafted messages and framing strategies, described generally as public diplomacy, to foster dialogue and shape international public opinion. The success of public diplomacy, however, depends on how far these national messages reach, and how effective they are in swaying international public opinion. Drawing on national and international news sources, this study conducts a framing analysis of 40 new stories covering the Reina nightclub terrorist attack, which took place in Istanbul on New Year's Eve of 2017. It analyzes the similarities and differences in the national versus international media coverage of the incident and discusses their implications for the effectiveness of Turkish public diplomacy.Item Open Access Corporate social responsibility and CSR fit as predictors of corporate reputation: a global perspective(Elsevier Ltd, 2016) Aksak, E. O.; Ferguson, M. A.; Duman, S. A.This paper reviews the literature for articles that include both the terms corporate social responsibility and reputation in the title and/or abstract. The results of the conceptual analysis reveal that most studies on CSR and reputation focus on practical implications without contributing to the theoretical framework. The authors propose applying institutional theory to enhance the understanding of the relationship between CSR and reputation and to foster public relations theory development. © 2015 Elsevier Inc.Item Open Access Departing from oneself cases of pre-rational mimesis before a spatial artwork(Routledge, 2001) Sarıkartal, Ç.Item Open Access Designing an international curriculum guideline for game audio: problems and solutions(Rochester Institute of Technology, 2011) Onen, U.; Stevens, R.; Collins, K.In this paper, we present an overview of some of the issues and questions encountered in developing an international game audio curriculum, and outline some of our solutions. In doing so, we discuss the interdisciplinary needs of video game instruction, the industry’s desire for key soft skills in addition to technical skills (based on our informal and formal querying), and the constraints faced in terms of institutional and international differences in curricular structure. While our curriculum is specifically concerned with game audio, our solutions and approach can be adapted across other disciplines facing similar difficulties.Item Open Access The development workshop cooperative giving voice to the voiceless(Routledge, 2021-11-04) Özdora Akşak, Emel Işıl; Dimitrova, Daniela V.This case study presents the case of a specific NGO from Turkey, the Development Workshop Cooperative (DWC), and reveals how the organization engages in advocacy for marginalized communities. Turkey fosters an active NGO scene, especially since the arrival of Syrian refugees in 2011. The DWC is one of the few local NGOs working to provide a voice to the most marginalized populations – namely, the Syrian Dom community, whose members are typically ignored by the Turkish and Syrian governments alike and tend to fall under the radar of most mainstream media due to the lack of access to this specific ethnic group. The Development Workshop Cooperative is also a unique NGO as it is innovatively structured as a non-profit cooperative. The main goal of this chapter is to reveal the communication and advocacy efforts of this innovative NGO to help create awareness about marginalized communities in Turkey and to foster social change and development. This qualitative study presents detailed interviews with two social development experts from the DWC to reveal their working structures, priorities, ongoing projects and advocacy efforts, media relations, main challenges they face, as well as their goals for the future in their work for disadvantaged communities in Turkey. The findings are discussed to reveal strategies for enhanced communication and advocacy for civil society organizations in their work to support disadvantaged and marginalized communities.Item Open Access Difference, event, subject: Antonio Negri’s political theory as postmodern metaphysics(Pluto Press, 2007) Mutman, Mahmut; Murphy, T. S.; Mustapha, A. -K.Item Open Access Discursive construction of Syrian refugees in shaping international public opinion: Turkey’s public diplomacy efforts(Sage Publications, 2020-06) Özdora Akşak, EmelThis research focuses on the Turkish government’s communications with the international community with regard to Syrian refugees. I use the Discourse Historical Approach to reveal and compare the discursive strategies that the official Turkish news agency has used as part of its public diplomacy efforts in their mass communication efforts regarding Syrian refugees during the last 8 years. The results reveal how a humanitarian issue such as the plight of refugees might be employed to establish a government’s political position, affirm its involvement and influence public opinion about a conflict that exceeds national boundaries and has turned into a challenge for international dominance involving world superpowers. The topics highlighted in the Turkish news reports and the argumentations that these reports put forward reveal that the Turkish government is highly critical of the international community, especially Western powers, for not fulfilling their humanitarian responsibilities. This specific criticism from Turkey regarding its outsized role in hosting refugees has become a leverage point to claim a place in the decision table about the future of Syria.Item Open Access Emotion - driven design(2008) Şener, B.; Kurtgözü, Aren Emre
