Item Open Access Analyzing the early republican ideology with specific reference to the Turkish literature : 1930-1945(2000) Birler, R. ÖmürHaving taken for granted that there exists a certain but nonlinear relation between political ideology and literature, this thesis seeks to trace the early republican political project vis a vis development of the Turkish literature. In this respect, two fundamental dimensions of the republican ideology, modernization and nationalism are considered; and the reflection of these two motives on the political agenda is analyzed through both the works and the debates of period’s Turkish literary world. Further, this thesis attempts to develop a proper theoretical framework derived from the Post-colonial literature theory in order to have a better understanding of the investigated case.Item Open Access II Selim dönemi sonuna kadar Osmanlı Edebî hâmîlik geleneği(2006) İsen-Durmuş, Tûbâ IşınsuThis study explores the Ottoman tradition of patronage of the literary arts up to the era of Selim II. It analyzes the definition of patronage, as well as its emergence and development, which coincided with the development of the empire, and compares disparate and similar views of patronage as it existed before and after the establishment of the Ottoman State. The main sources drawn upon in the chapters, “An Overview of the Founding of the Ottoman Tradition of Patronage of the Literary Arts,” “Patrons and Critics: The Presentation and Evaluation of Poetry during the Ottoman Empire’s Foundation,” “The Benefits of the Patronage System as Enjoyed by the Artist, the Patron and Society in General,” and “An Evaluation of Criticism of the Patronage System,” are poets’ biographies (tezkire) and original documents acquired from Topkapı Palace’s Treasury Archive. This study illustrates the crucial role that the Ottoman system of patronage played in the development of Ottoman poetry, and argues that the richness of the Ottoman poetic repertoire is due, in part, to its patrons’ double role as patrons and critics. At first glance, this system’s first benefit for the artist appears to be the câize, or reward given to the poet for a laudatory poem. However, when one considers the polemics surrounding this reward system, which point to its ceremonial nature, it becomes obvious that such material benefits were of lesser importance than the values of “protection and authority” which the patronage system ensured both patrons and artists.Item Open Access Türkiye'de deneme ve eleştirinin gelişiminde Orhan Burian'ın yeri(2003) Canpolat, MügeOrhan Burian (1914-1953) was a prominent figure in Turkish culture and literature with his essays, critical writings, reviews, and translations. Although Burian is not well-known by contemporary readers, he has had an important place in the development of the Turkish essay and criticism especially with his objective style of writing. This thesis entitled “Orhan Burian’s Place in the Development of Essay and Criticism in Turkey” aims to assess the place of Burian in Turkish essay and criticism by examining his writings collected in his book titled Denemeler Eleştiriler (1964) and his articles published in such periodicals as Belleten, Devlet Tiyatrosu, Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesi Dergisi, Söz, Tercüme, Ufuklar, Ülkü, and Yücel. The critical writings of Orhan Burian can be grouped into two as “literary” and “cultural”. This classification also applies for Burian as a critic. In the thesis, as I examine Burian’s cultural criticism, I have tried to demonstrate his way of proposing concrete solutions to concrete problems in his works along with his non-dogmatic and rational manner as an intellectual. The essay as a literary genre has historically developed along two main roads: the “objective essay” in the manner of Bacon and the “subjective essay” in the manner of Montaigne. Burian has preferred the objective style and a critical way of thinking in his essays as well. In this thesis, it has been argued that Orhan Burian is an exceptional figure among his contemporaries with his objective style of writing in his essays as well as in his critical writings. Although he was somewhat overlooked by the readers of his time, Burian has had a leading role in the development of scientific-objective criticism in Turkey.
