Item Open Access Design strategies for ratiometric chemosensors: modulation of excitation energy transfer at the energy donor site(2009) Guliyev, R.; Coskun, A.; Akkaya, E. U.Excitation energy transfer, when coupled to an ion-modulated ICT chromophore, creates novel opportunities in sensing. The direction of energy transfer and the point of ICT modulation can be varied as desired. In our previous work, we have shown that energy transfer efficiency between two energetically coupled fluorophores will be altered by the metal ion binding to the ICT chromophore carrying a ligand. There are two beneficial results: increased pseudo-Stokes shift and expanded dynamic range. Here, we explored the consequences of the modulation of energy transfer efficiency at the energy donor site, in a molecular design which has an ICT type metal ion-sensitive chromophore placed as the energy donor in the dyad. Clear advantages emerge compared to the acceptor site modulation: unaltered emission wavelength in the red end of the visible spectrum, while keeping a large Stokes shift and the ratiometric character. © 2009 American Chemical Society.Item Open Access Dielectric inspired scaling of polarization conversion subwavelength resonances in open ultrathin chiral structures(A I P Publishing LLC, 2015) Serebryannikov, A. E.; Mutlu, M.; Özbay, EkmelIt is shown that the scaling of subwavelength resonances in open ultrathin chiral structures can be obtained by varying only the permittivity of dielectric spacers, while multiband one-way polarization conversion and related asymmetric transmission remain possible. These features are quite general and obtainable in a wide range of parameter variation. Surprisingly, the difference in the power of ε for the classical ε-1/2 scaling rule and the empirical rules obtained in the present letter does not exceed 22%, giving an important entry point for future theoretical studies and design strategies. Both spectral scaling and conservation of the polarization characteristics can be achieved by using either tunneling or real-index impedance matching. The scaled structures with strong polarization and directional selectivity may have thickness of λ/100 and smaller. © 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.Item Open Access An ontology-based universal design knowledge support system(Elsevier, 2011-05) Afacan, Yasemin; Demirkan, H.An effective and efficient knowledge support system is crucial for universal design process, as it has become a major design issue in the last decade with the growth of the elderly population and disabled people. There are a limited number of CAD investigations on the nature of knowledge processing that supports the cognitive activities of universal design process. Therefore, this paper proposes an ontology-based computer-assisted universal design (CAUD) plug-in tool that supports designers in developing satisfactory universal design solutions in the conceptual design phase. The required knowledge processing and representation of the developed tool is motivated by the ontological language. It is based on the multiple divergence-convergence cognitive strategies and cognitive needs of designers in the analysis/synthesis/evaluation operations. The CAUD plug-in tool is the first attempt to interface the universal design knowledge ontologically and respond to the requirements of conceptual design phase. According to the user acceptance study, the tool is assessed as useful, understandable, efficient, supportive and satisfactory.Item Open Access Rethinking social inclusivity: Design strategies for cities(ICE Publishing, 2011) Afacan, Yasemin; Afacan, S. O.Cities have become more fragmented due to the increasing urbanisation of many parts of the world. There is more inequality and a growing complexity of social life in cities that leads to social exclusion and increasing social differentiation. This study approaches social inclusivity within the context of universal urban design and defines it as a vehicle for promoting human wellbeing, environmental wholeness and principles of participatory democracy. Mat urbanism - an urban form concept that is more organic and fluid than other urban forms and models - is proposed, alongside a universal design approach, to achieve the goals of sustainable communities and enhance quality of life. The relationship of mat urbanism to the features of high-quality environments and sustainable developments is questioned and illustrated with simple diagrams. The paper concludes with the importance of universally designed sets of regulatory practices regarding sustainable architecture and urban development - from individual buildings to the district and city-scale level. The contribution of this study is not only to explore the potentials of Smithson's configurations theoretically but also to open new means through which towns and cities can be planned in the future in order to promote social inclusivity, environmental responsiveness, sustainability and universal urban design.
