Item Open Access Acoustical design and noise control in metro stations: Case studies of the Ankara metro system(2007) Sü, Z.; Çalíşkan, M.The aim of this research is to demonstrate the importance of initial strategies in acoustical design of underground metro stations. The paper searches for practical design solutions by evaluating different materials for providing optimum acoustical conditions in such spaces. Acoustical designs of three metro stations on a new expansion line in Ankara including Sogutozu, Bilkent and ODTU metro stations are presented through computer simulation. Predictions of room acoustical parameters are presented for both platform and ticket office floors in terms of parameters like reverberation time (RT), speech transmission index (STI) and A-weighted sound level (SPL) distribution within spaces. Simulated reverberation times are evaluated in view of legislative requirements. The study confirms the importance of using sound absorbing materials on the ceiling and sidewalls together. The nonwoven material, used behind perforated metal suspended ceilings, has proved effective in reverberation control.Item Open Access Adaptive filtering approaches for non-Gaussian stable processes(IEEE, 1995-05) Arıkan, Orhan; Belge, Murat; Çetin, A. In this paper, α-stable distributions, which have heavier tails than Gaussian distribution, are considered to model non-Gaussian signals. Adaptive signal processing in the presence of such kind of noise is a requirement of many practical problems. Since, direct application of commonly used adaptation techniques fail in these applications, new approaches for adaptive filtering for α-stable random processes are introduced.Item Open Access Adaptive methods for dithering color images(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 1997-07) Akarun, L.; Yardımcı, Y.; Çetin, A. EnisMost color image printing and display devices do not have the capability of reproducing true color images. A common remedy is the use of dithering techniques that take advantage of the lower sensitivity of the eye to spatial resolution and exchange higher color resolution with lower spatial resolution. In this paper, an adaptive error diffusion method for color images is presented. The error diffusion filter coefficients are updated by a normalized least mean square-type (LMS-type) algorithm to prevent textural contours, color impulses, and color shifts, which are among the most common side effects of the standard dithering algorithms. Another novelty of the new method is its vector character: Previous applications of error diffusion have treated the individual color components of an image separately. Here, we develop a general vector approach and demonstrate through simulation studies that superior results are achieved.Item Open Access Adaptive OFDM modulation for underwater acoustic communications: Design considerations and experimental results(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2014) Radosevic, A.; Ahmed, R.; Duman, T. G.; Stojanovic, M.In this paper, we explore design aspects of adaptive modulation based on orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) for underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, and study its performance using real-time at-sea experiments. Our design criterion is to maximize the system throughput under a target average bit error rate (BER). We consider two different schemes based on the level of adaptivity: in the first scheme, only the modulation levels are adjusted while the power is allocated uniformly across the subcarriers, whereas in the second scheme, both the modulation levels and the power are adjusted adaptively. For both schemes we linearly predict the channel one travel time ahead so as to improve the performance in the presence of a long propagation delay. The system design assumes a feedback link from the receiver that is exploited in two forms: one that conveys the modulation alphabet and quantized power levels to be used for each subcarrier, and the other that conveys a quantized estimate of the sparse channel impulse response. The second approach is shown to be advantageous, as it requires significantly fewer feedback bits for the same system throughput. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive schemes is demonstrated using computer simulations, real channel measurements recorded in shallow water off the western coast of Kauai, HI, USA, in June 2008, and real-time at-sea experiments conducted at the same location in July 2011. We note that this is the first paper that presents adaptive modulation results for UWA links with real-time at-sea experiments.Item Open Access Adaptive polyphase subband decomposition structures for image compression(IEEE, 2000) Gerek, Ö. N.; Çetin, A. EnisSubband decomposition techniques have been extensively used for data coding and analysis. In most filter banks, the goal is to obtain subsampled signals corresponding to different spectral regions of the original data. However, this approach leads to various artifacts in images having spatially varying characteristics, such as images containing text, subtitles, or sharp edges. In this paper, adaptive filter banks with perfect reconstruction property are presented for such images. The filters of the decomposition structure which can be either linear or nonlinear vary according to the nature of the signal. This leads to improved image compression ratios. Simulation examples are presented.Item Open Access Adaptive schemes for location update generation in execution location-dependent continuous queries(Elsevier Inc., 2006-04) Lam, Kam-Yiu; Ulusoy, ÖzgürAn important feature that is expected to be owned by today's mobile computing systems is the ability of processing location-dependent continuous queries on moving objects. The result of a location-dependent query depends on the current location of the mobile client which has generated the query as well as the locations of the moving objects on which the query has been issued. When a location-dependent query is specified to be continuous, the result of the query can continuously change. In order to provide accurate and timely query results to a client, the location of the client as well as the locations of moving objects in the system has to be closely monitored. Most of the location generation methods proposed in the literature aim to optimize utilization of the limited wireless bandwidth. The issues of correctness and timeliness of query results reported to clients have been largely ignored. In this paper, we propose an adaptive monitoring method (AMM) and a deadline-driven method (DDM) for managing the locations of moving objects. The aim of our methods is to generate location updates with the consideration of maintaining the correctness of query evaluation results without increasing location update workload. Extensive simulation experiments have been conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed methods as compared to a well-known location update generation method, the plain dead-reckoning (pdr). © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.Item Open Access AIMD-based online MPLS traffic engineering for TCP flows via distributed multi-path routing(Springer, 2004) Alparslan O.; Akar, N.; Karasan, E.With this paper, we propose a distributed online traffic engineering architecture for MPLS networks. In this architecture, a primary and secondary MPLS LSP are established from an ingress LSR to every other egress LSR. We propose to split the TCP traffic between the primary and secondary paths using a distributed mechanism based on ECN marking and AIMD-based rate control. Inspired by the random early detection mechanism for active queue management, we propose a random early reroute scheme to adaptively control the delay difference between the primary and secondary LSPS. Considering the adverse effect of packet reordering on TCP performance for packet-based load balancing schemes, we propose that the TCP splitting mechanism operates on a per-flow basis. Using flow-based models developed for Internet traffic and simulations, we show that flow-based distributed multi-path traffic engineering outperforms on a consistent basis the case of a single path in terms of per-flow goodputs. Due to the elimination of out-of-order packet arrivals, flow-based splitting also enhances TCP performance with respect to packet-based splitting especially for long TCP flows that are hit hard by packet reordering. We also compare and contrast two queuing architectures for differential treatment of data packets routed over primary and secondary LSPS in the MPLS data plane, namely first-in-first-out and strict priority queuing. We show through simulations that strict priority queuing is more effective and relatively more robust with respect to the changes in the traffic demand matrix than first-in-first-out queuing in the context of distributed multi-path routing.Item Open Access Algebraic reconstraction for 3D magnetic resonance-electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) using one component of magnetic flux density(Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, 2004) Ider, Y. Z.; Onart, S.Magnetic resonance-electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) algorithms fall into two categories: those utilizing internal current density and those utilizing only one component of measured magnetic flux density. The latter group of algorithms have the advantage that the object does not have to be rotated in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. A new algorithm which uses only one component of measured magnetic flux density is developed. In this method, the imaging problem is formulated as the solution of a non-linear matrix equation which is solved iteratively to reconstruct resistivity. Numerical simulations are performed to test the algorithm both for noise-free and noisy cases. The uniqueness of the solution is monitored by looking at the singular value behavior of the matrix and it is shown that at least two current injection profiles are necessary. The method is also modified to handle region-of-interest reconstructions. In particular it is shown that, if the image of a certain xy-slice is sought for, then it suffices to measure the z-component of magnetic flux density up to a distance above and below that slice. The method is robust and has good convergence behavior for the simulation phantoms used.Item Open Access Analysis of assembly systems for interdeparture time variability and throughput(Taylor & Francis, 2002) Sabuncuoğlu, İ.; Erel, E.; Kok, A. G.This paper studies the effect of the number of component stations (parallelism), work transfer, processing time distributions, buffers and buffer allocation schemes on throughput and interdeparture time variability of assembly systems, As an alternative to work transfer, variability transfer is introduced and its effectiveness is assessed. Previous research has indicated that the optimal throughput displays an anomaly at certain processing time distributions and, this phenomenon is now thoroughly analyzed and the underlying details are uncovered. This study also yields several new findings that convey important practical implications.Item Open Access Analysis of concurrency control protocols for real-time database systems(Elsevier, 1998) Ulusoy, ÖzgürThis paper provides an approximate analytic solution method for evaluating the performance of concurrency control protocols developed for real-time database systems (RTDBSs). Transactions processed in a RTDBS are associated with timing constraints typically in the form of deadlines. The primary consideration in developing a RTDBS concurrency control protocol is the fact that satisfaction of the timing constraints of transactions is as important as maintaining the consistency of the underlying database. The proposed solution method provides the evaluation of the performance of concurrency control protocols in terms of the satisfaction rate of timing constraints. As a case study, a RTDBS concurrency control protocol, called High Priority, is analyzed using the proposed method. The accuracy of the performance results obtained is ascertained via simulation. The solution method is also used to investigate the real-time performance benefits of the High Priority over the ordinary Two-Phase Locking.Item Open Access Analysis of the 2D nonconcentric large reflector antenna-in-radome system: H-polarization case(IEEE, 2004) Oğuzer, Taner2D nonconcentric reflector antenna-in-radome system is analyzed for H-polarization case. Larger geometries are solved in reasonable cpu times by using the FFT based algorithm in the computation of the Green's function.Item Open Access Analytic modeling of loss and cross-coupling in capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers(IEEE, Piscataway, NJ, United States, 1998) Bozkurt, A.; Degertekin, F. T.The structural loss mechanism of capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (cMUT) is investigated using finite element analysis and the normal mode theory. A single micromachined transducer membrane on an infinite silicon substrate is simulated by incorporating absorbing boundary conditions in the finite element method. This enables direct evaluation of the mechanical impedance of the membrane. Furthermore, the field distribution along the thickness of the silicon substrate due to outward radiating wave modes is obtained. The normal mode theory is applied to extract the contributions of different wave modes to the complicated field distributions. It is found that, the lowest order Lamb wave modes are responsible for the loss. Evaluation of absolute and relative power losses due to individual modes indicate that the lowest order anti-symmetric (A0) mode is the dominant radial mode in agreement with experimental measurements. The results of the analysis are used to derive a detailed equivalent circuit model of a cMUT with structural loss.Item Open Access Analytic thermal modeling for dc-to-midrange modulation frequency responses of thin-film high-Tc superconductive edge-transition bolometers(Optical Society of America, 2001) Fardmanesh, M.Thin-film superconductive edge-transition bolometers are modeled with a one-dimensional analytic thermal model with joule heating, film and substrate materials, and the physical interface effects taken into consideration. The results from the model agree well with the experimental results of samples made of large-meander-line Yba2Cu3O7-x films on crystalline SrTiO3, LaAlO3, and MgO substrates up to 100 kHz, the limits of the experimental setup. Compared with the results of the SrTiO3 substrate samples, the results from the model of the LaAlO3 and the MgO substrate samples deviate slightly from the measured values at very low modulation frequencies (below ∼10 Hz). The deviation increases for higher thermal-conductive substrate materials. When the model was used, the substrate absorption and the thermal parameters of the devices could also be investigated. © 2001 Optical Society of America.Item Open Access Analytical model of asynchronous shared-per-wavelength multi-fiber optical switch(IEEE, 2011) Akar, Nail; Raffaelli, C.; Savi, M.In this paper, a buffer-less shared-per-wavelength optical switch is equipped with multi-fiber interfaces and operated in asynchronous context. An analytical model to evaluate loss performance is proposed using an approximate Markov-chain based approach and the model is validated by simulations. The model is demonstrated to be quite accurate in spite of the difficulty in capturing correlation effects especially for small switch sizes. The model is also applied to calculate the number of optical components needed to design the optical switch according to packet loss requirements. The impact of the adoption of multiple fiber interfaces is outlined in terms of the remarkable saving in the number of wavelength converters employed, while increasing at the same time the number of optical gates needed by the space switching subsystem. The numerical results produced are a valuable basis to optimize overall switch cost. © 2011 IEEE.Item Open Access Animation of deformable models(Pergamon Press, 1994) Güdükbay, Uğur; Özgüç, B.Although kinematic modelling methods are adequate for describing the shapes of static objects, they are insufficient when it comes to producing realistic animation. Physically based modelling remedies this problem by including forces, masses, strain energies and other physical quantities. The paper describes a system for the animation of deformable models. The system uses physically based modelling methods and approaches from elasticity theory for animating the models. Two different formulations, namely the primal formulation and the hybrid formulation, are implemented so that the user can select the one most suitable for an animation depending on the rigidity of the models. Collision of the models with impenetrable obstacles and constraining of the model points to fixed positions in space are implemented for use in the animations. © 1994.Item Open Access An animation system for fracturing of rigid objects(Springer, Berlin, Heidelberg, 2005) Küçükyilmaz, Ayşe; Özgüç, BülentThis paper describes a system for the animation of fracturing brittle objects. The system combines rigid body simulation methods with a constraint-based model to animate fracturing of arbitrary polyhedral shaped objects under impact. The objects are represented as sets of masses, where pairs of adjacent masses are connected via a distance-preserving linear constraint. Lagrange multipliers are used to compute the forces exerted by those constraints, where these forces determine how and where the object will break. However, a problem with existing systems is that the initial body models exhibit well-defined uniformity, which makes the generated animations unrealistic. This work introduces a method for generating more realistic cracks without any performance loss. Plane-wave scattering problems were simulated. The improvements in both plane-wave and finite-source excitation schemes were demonstrated. The scheme is able to allocate network bandwidth in a Pareto-optimal way that maximizes the total surplus. T.This study investigates excess stock price volatility using the variance bound framework of LeRoy and Porter [The present-value relation: tests based on implied variance bounds, Econometrica 49 (1981) 555-574] and of Shiller [Do stock prices move too much to be justified by subsequent changes in dividends? Am. Econ. Rev. 71 (1981) 421-436.]. The conditional variance bound relationship is examined using cross-sectional data simulated from the general equilibrium asset pricing model of Brock [Asset prices in a production economy, in: J.J. McCall (Ed.), The Economics of Information and Uncertainty, University of Chicago Press, Chicago (for N.B.E.R.), 1982]. Results show that the conditional variance bounds hold, hence, our hypothesis of the validity of the dividend discount model cannot be rejected. Moreover, in our setting, markets are efficient and stock prices are neither affected by herd psychology nor by the outcome of noise trading by naive investors; thus, we are able to control for market efficiency. Consequently, we show that one cannot infer any conclusions about market efficiency from the unconditional variance bounds tests.
