Türkiye'de görülen doğal afetler arasında deprem, kayda değer hasar bırakan afetlerden biridir. Kuzey Anadolu Fay Hattı, Doğu Anadolu Fay Hattı ve Batı Anadolu Fay Hattı Türkiye coğrafyasının büyük bir kısmını kapladığı için çok sık deprem görülmektedir. Bu depremler maddi hasara sebep olmalarının yanı sıra sosyal, kültürel ve politik boyutlarda da değişimlere neden olur. 1957 yılında gerçekleşen Büyük Fethiye Depremi de Türkiye doğal afet geçmişinde büyük yer kaplar. Kos gibi Yunan adalarında da etkisi hissedilen deprem Fethiye'de ağır maddi ve manevi kayıplara neden olmuştur. Depremin yerli ve yabancı basında büyük yer kaplaması depremzedelere hem devlet hem de yabancı ülkeler tarafından yardım ulaşmasını sağladı. Dönem hükümetinin sosyo-ekonomik politikaları deprem sonrası yardım sürecine de yansımıştır. Bu araştırmada depremin teknik özellikleri, bu teknik özelliklerin sonucunda oluşan yıkım, yıkımdan bölge halkının ne şekilde etkilendiği ve bu etkilerin Fethiye'nin günümüz yaşantısına etkileri incelenmiştir.

Among the natural disasters that are witnessed in Turkey, earthquakes are among the ones that cause major damage. Since North Anatolian Fault Line, East Anatolian Fault Line and West Anatolian Fault Line cover the majority of Turkey's surface area earthquakes are seen regularly. Alongside the financial damage these earthquakes generate, they cause changes in social, cultural and political dimensions. The earthquake that happened in Fethiye in 1957 holds importance in Turkey's natural disaster history. The earthquake that has also been sensed in Greek Islands such as Kos, caused extensive financial and moral losses. The earthquake was covered in national and international press and this led to aid to be sent from both the government and foreign countries. The socio-economic policies of the current government were also carried on during the aftermath of the earthquake. This research aims to cover the technical properties of the earthquake, the destruction caused as a result of these technical properties, how the local public was affected by the destruction and the results of the earthquake that are still seen in today's Fethiye.
